Show more

“…Restingas of the Southern and Southeastern regions of Brazil have longer periods of soil flooding, which in turn favors increased water content of the soils of these environments due to, mainly, the topography, the depth of the water table, and the proximity of water bodies (Silva 1999). These factors, based on recent studies, influence the distribution of the phanerogamic flora in the restingas of the Southern and Southeastern regions (Assis 2011;Marques et al 2011). On the other hand, studies that seek to empirically determine what environmental factors affect the spatial distribution of bryophyte species in restingas are absent.…”

“…The original vegetation cover is open. It is dominated by herbaceous plants and shrubs that have xerophytic adaptations (Assis et al 2011, Lima et al 2011, together with other associated Atlantic forest elements (Magnago et al 2010). …”

“…These wet forests thus serve as sources of species able to overcome environmental filters imposed by unique restinga soil conditions (Assis et al 2011). The proximity of wet forests that serve as sources of propagules should have strong influences on community assemblages and diversity patterns in Restinga forests (Assumpção & Nascimento 2000;Almeida Jr et al 2009;Santos et al 2012).…”
