Objective In this study we aimed to understand how extrinsic environmental factors measured in the watercourses and the surrounding landscape influence the ichthyofauna of first-order streams. Methods Data were collected within the Corumbataí River Basin, São Paulo, southeastern Brazil, during the dry season of 2012. We sampled the ichthyofauna in 13 stretches of streams distributed across four river sub-basins. The stretches differed in relation to the presence/absence of riparian forest, the predominant type of matrix and the percentage of forest. Response variables were species richness and the occurrence of functional groups and explanatory variables include both local and landscape structures from the surrounding environment. Local variables comprised the following water quality and structural attributes: pH, temperature, conductivity, turbidity, flow rate, depth, width, type of substrate. Landscape variables included presence/absence of riparian vegetation, type of vegetation, type of matrix, percentage of forest and canopy cover. Results A total of 268 individuals were recorded, which were distributed among 12 species. The landscape structure influenced the occurrence of functional groups in first-order streams, especially allochthonous-feeders, nektonic and hypoxia-intolerant species. The presence of riparian forest was the most important predictor. Species richness was negatively related to the presence of riparian vegetation, supporting the hypothesis that degraded landscapes lead to a reduction in diversity. Conclusion The protection of riparian vegetation is critical to the maintenance of ichthyofauna diversity in first-order streams. The presence or absence of riparian vegetation differently affected the occurrence of species depending on their functional characteristics, particularly those related to the tolerance to hypoxia, source of alimentary items and the position in the water column.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate specific characteristics and common features related to the abundance and the gradient of environmental conditions and food resources used by Trichomycterus bahianus and Characidium aff. zebra. These species are two typical streams fishes collected during the rainy season using electric fishing equipment in eight sites at the headwaters of the Cachoeira river basin, in a region of Atlantic rainforest in southeast of Bahia State. We quantified the correlation between environmental data and abundance through a principal component analysis. It was obtained the diet amplitude, the niche overlap and tested the differences in exploitation of food resources. In addition, we tested the differences in composition and degree of food preference in different stages of development. We collected 55 specimens of C. zebra and 124 of T. bahianus. It was found that the abundance of the two species is related to the gradient grass-rock on the shore and sand-boulder at the bottom. We can say that regardless of species, females were larger and heavier than males (p < 0.001). The sex ratio of C. zebra differ from the expected (χ 2 = 4.091, df = 1, p = 0.043). The two species were classified as invertivorous, consuming mostly immature aquatic insects. There was no significant difference in the number of items consumed by the species, and the diet overlap was high (O j,k = 0.895). However, the species showed different strategies to obtain food which lead to significant differences in exploitation of food resources (p < 0.001). This was evidenced when we took into account the different stages of development, showing that the diet of C. zebra is more generalist than T. bahianus. Probably, the sharing of abundant resources and differences in the occupation of microhabitats and life strategies allows the coexistence of this two species in the streams of the Cachoeira river basin during the rainy season. The Biological Reserve of Una, located in the south of Bahia, is a region with v ery little information about the composition, diversity and spatial distribution of the species. The objective of the present study was to know the composition and structure of the fish assembly of the streams of Biological Reserve of Una – REBIO. Four sampl es were taken at sev en points distributed in six streams, one being outside the reserve limits, between February 2011 and March 2012. The specimens were captured with trawls of the picaré and puçá type. In the field, the specimens were anesthetized, fixed in 10% formaldehyde and placed in 70% alcohol. The species were identified with specialized bibliography. The specimens that remained in doubt were sent to specialists from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) for identification. Then the material was deposited in the scientific collection of the State University of Santa Cruz (UESC). The occurrence constancy index, Shannon Diversity Index, Margalef Wealth and the Pielou Equity index were applied. In the ecological indexes, the ABC curv es and the MDS ordering method were calculated. A similarity matrix was calculated from the Bray Curtis index. W statistic consisting of a numerical summary of the ABC curve was applied. The t - test was used to verify the lev el of significance at 9 5%. A total of 5549 individuals belonging to 4 orders, 9 families and 22 species were collected, of which 8 had indefinite taxonomic status, which confirms that the region is little explored from the point of view of the ichthyofauna. The results indicate the dominance of opportunistic species and demonstrate the influence of environmental conserv ation on the composition of the fish congregation. The lack of studies in the region and human occupation refl ect the presence of undescribed species and the risk of extinction and the creation of a conservation strategy.
