On the use of open or closed traps in the capture of drosophilids

Show more

“…Traps with attractive bait contained banana fermented for 48 hours in 100 g portions and the traps were exposed for 48 hours in order to capture frugivorous drosophilids (Martins et al 2008). This exposure time is in agreement with other studies for surveying drosophilids (Martins 1987; de Medeiros & Klaczko 2004; Penariol et al 2008; Coutinho‐Silva et al 2017; Mendes et al 2017, 2021; Duarte et al 2018), as well as effects of the loss of bait attractiveness after 48 hours (Nascimento et al 2014). After this period, the collected drosophilids were removed from the traps with a mechanical sucker and stored in 96% alcohol and individualized by traps.…”

“…Adults of Z. indianus species were collected from three distinct locations in Brazil (Figure S1). The collections were conducted between April and June 2018, using ten closed traps baited with banana and natural yeast (Penariol et al., 2008) distributed at five collection points per area, with three traps per point. The traps were positioned at 1.80 m from the ground, spaced 3 m apart, and kept in place for three days until the collection, sorting, and individualization of females of Z. indianus in tubes containing banana‐agar culture medium for the establishment of isofemale lineages.…”
