ABSTRACTThe Environmental Management Accounting System (SICOGEA), now in its third generation, is a tool to help control and prevent environmental impacts of organizations. This article presents results of applications of SICOGEA in studies published between 2011 and 2017. We identified 63 publications in this period. For this analysis, we selected 26 studies that applied the method (generations 2 or 3). It was observed that SICOGEA was applied in the three sectors of the economy, in areas such as health, industry, public administration and education, the latter with the largest number of organizations that applied the system. There is a prevalence of studies in the southern region of Brazil, most of which were carried out in the state of Santa Catarina, where the method was conceived. SICOGEA has shown itself to be a support system for the management of practices that promote environmental sustainability in organizations, by identifying environmental impacts and proposing alternatives to minimize them. Some authors applied SICOGEA with adaptations, however without undergoing validation processes. For its improvement, it is recommended to standardize the weights of the questions formulated in the questionnaires in order to avoid their subjectivity and compromise their results.
