Abstract: The foraging, territoriality and displacement of the Snail Kite were studied over 232 hours of observations in an urban lake during the dry and wet seasons. The temperature and rainfall variations were used to correlate with predation rates and the correlation coefficients were 0,39 and 0,34, respectively. Snail Kites spent more time foraging during the wet than the dry season when perching is more frequently recorded. The higher predation in the wet season can be explained by the higher abundance of a… Show more

“…This ecoregion experience seasonal flooding. Therefore, studies on the seasonal movements of waterfowls and their spatio-temporal dynamics are crucial for providing the data necessary to plan their conservation (Posso et al, 2012;Donatelli et al, 2014). Nevertheless, very few studies have sought to understand the spatio-temporal dynamics of birds in the Upper Paraná Forest (Zuquim Antas, 1994;Gimenes and Anjos, 2011;Ronchi-Virgolini et al, 2009;Lorenzón et al, 2016Lorenzón et al, , 2019, and none of them has focused on the highly altered northwestern region of the state of São Paulo.…”

“…Third, nomadism refers to the movement pattern of an animal that irregularly shifts its home range core location to exploit spatially and temporally fluctuating resources. This type of movement is best described in birds and mammals, but also occurs in a range of diverse taxonomic groups including gastropods (Posso et al., 2012) or even social insects that can occasionally relocate their nests (McGlynn, 2012). Fourth, migration occurs when an animal seasonally undertakes a bi‐directional movement.…”

“…On the day of observation, we recorded the maximum amount of snails consumed/h (7.33). Bourne (1985) and Posso et al (2012) also describe this territorial behavior exhibited by males, with vocalizations and persecutions against intruders in their food territories. We conclude that the territorial behavior of the Snail Kite in both wetlands is frequent and this can increase in periods of low snail availability.…”
