Biological aspects of Periga circumstans Walker, 1855 (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae: Hemileucinae) with larvae reared on khaki and mate-plant leaves

Abstract: The goal of the present study was to investigate biological aspects of Periga circumstans Walker, 1855 (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae: Hemileucinae) whose larvae were fed on leaves of khaki-plant (Diospyros khaki Linnaeus -Ebenaceae) and Mate-plant (Ilex paraguariensis Saint Hilaire -Aquifoliaceae) leaves. The biological parameters were obtained from specimens kept under controlled conditions: temperature of 25 ± 1 °C, relative humidity of 70 ± 10%, and photoperiod of 12 hours. For each developmental stage, morphol… Show more

“…The loss of the cremaster, or at least the hooks, also occurs in D. baroma (Specht et al 2008) and in other hemileucids which pupate in the soil, such as P. circumstans (Specht et al 2008(Specht et al , 2011 and L. obliqua (Lorini & Corseuil 2001, Lorini 2008, and certainly represents an adaptation to the formation of the pupa in the soil, without the protection of a resistant cocoon. More detailed behavioral studies on male and female pupae of D. dolosa should be carried out to assess possible differences related to the presence and absence of hooks on the cremaster for each sex.…”

“…Ten samples of healthy and five samples of unhealthy were investigated. As a parameter of evaluation was used the classification of Specht et al (2011) and Spadacci‐Morena et al (2016) . The external morphology of the scoli and pines of caterpillars healthy and unhealthy were photographed using a stereomicroscope Leica S6D with the magnification range from 6.3× up to 1.25× and an ocular graticule 10/0.1 mm (Leica S6D and L2.…”

“…Thus, with potentially informative characters existing among some members of suprageneric groups within the Saturniinae, comparisons with characters observed in the pupae of A. fallax were feasible. Pupae of Arsenurinae, Hemileucinae, Oxyteninae and Saturniinae (Aiello & Balcázar-Lara 1997;Mosher 1914Mosher , 1916aRougerie & Estradel 2008;Specht et al 2007Specht et al , 2008Specht et al , 2009Specht et al , 2011 differ from each other and from species of Ceratocampinae. Additionally, there are characters with less-discernible variation found among related species representing categories between suprageneric and family level.…”
