Introduced species in the Pantanal: implications for conservation

Abstract: Land use and human occupation within the natural habitats of the Pantanal have facilitated introduction of invasive species of plants and animals, including domestic species. Exotic species threaten regional biodiversity because they modify ecological community structure, alter natural habitats and affect local biodiversity. An international organisation, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the Brazilian government, identify invasive species as the third most important threat to biod… Show more

“…Article eight of this treaty establishes that each country that is party to the Convention has to make efforts to avoid the introduction of non-native species (Alho et al, 2011). One way to greatly reduce the potential impact that aquarium trade may cause on the water bodies of Minas Gerais State is by better informing those involved in this market, such as sectors dealing with importation, breeding, transportation and trading of aquarium fish, as well as hobbyists.…”

“…The Convention on Biological Diversity, signed by Brazil, establishes in its article eight that each country that is party to the Convention has to make efforts to prevent the introduction, and if possible, control the populations of non-native species (Alho et al, 2011). Given the apparent establishment of P. managuensis in waters of the state of Pernambuco, and the real risk of spread and adverse ecological impacts as already occurs in Gurjão Reservoir, some management recommendations are suggested to avoid further introductions:…”

“…According Alho et al (2011), the Pantanal and its surrounding upland plateau have experienced the introduction of various alien species, and researchers have reported that biological invasions have been indicated as one of the main causes of biodiversity loss in the world (Brown and Lomolino, 1998). And the information for fish are much more worrying, because about 50% of fish extinctions in the world may be related to the introduction of exotic species (Clavero and García-Berthou, 2005).…”
