Hemibagrus nemurus is a riverine catfish with high economic and nutritive values. Investigations on ovarian development of this fish were carried out to determine the mode of ovarian development and describe the oocyte developmental stages. Histological studies were done on ovaries using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Fish were sampled monthly for a period of six months (August 2009 to January 2010). The mean oocyte diameter (OD) ranged from 871 ± 161.41 µm to 1,167 ± 26.77 µm and the highest OD was in November. Oocyte size-frequency distribution showed a polymodal distribution. The mean gonadosomatic index (GSI) ranged from 1.14 ± 0.87% to 7.06 ± 1.40% and highest GSI was in November. The ovaries exhibited three phases of oocyte growth, which were primary growth, secondary growth and maturation phases. Based on histological criteria, the oocyte developmental stages were divided into seven stages as chromatin nucleolar, early perinucleolar, late perinucleolar, cortical alveolar, vitellogenesis, mature oocyte and germinal vesicle migration stages. All the seven stages of oocyte development were observed in the ovaries. Oogonia were always present throughout the developmental stages. The ovaries had more than two stages of oocyte development. This is the first report on the mode of ovarian development of H. nemurus. These findings indicated that H. nemurus has asynchronous mode of ovarian development and is capable of spawning several times in a year under favourable conditions.

RESUMEN. La lisaMugil curema tiene amplia distribución en América, habitando sistemas costeros y estuarinos. Es un recurso con importancia pesquera en varias regiones del Pacífico mexicano. El objetivo del presente trabajo es describir aspectos reproductivos de M. curema durante un ciclo anual. Se realizaron muestreos mensuales con redes y atarraya de febrero 2011 a enero 2012 en la Laguna Barra de Navidad, Jalisco, México. Se analizaron 495 ejemplares, a los cuales se les midió la longitud y el peso total. De cada ejemplar se extrajeron las gónadas, se pesaron, clasificaron según su maduración y se procesaron para histología. Se capturaron ejemplares entre 10,3 y 38,5 cm, con promedio de 26,1 cm. Se identificaron 375 hembras con promedio de 27,2 cm y 110 machos con promedio de 23,4 cm. El número de hembras dominó de manera significativa en la muestra total, por mes y por clase de longitud. Los valores máximos del índice gonadosomático ocurrieron en abril, agosto y noviembre. El factor de condición presentó valores altos en varios meses coincidiendo en ambos sexos. En la ovogénesis se identificaron seis fases de desarrollo de los ovocitos y debido a la gran cantidad de ovocitos con crecimiento primario y en vitelogénesis 2 y 3, el patrón de desarrollo fue sincrónico por grupos con desove total. La longitud promedio de madurez (L50) de machos fue de 21,7 cm y de hembras de 24,5 cm. Contrastando estas dos últimas longitudes con las de captura, se sugiere que más del 50% de los organismos capturados son individuos que se reprodujeron al menos una vez. Total length and weight were measured for each specimen and gonads were collected, weighted, classified after their maturation stage and preserved for histological analyses. Caught fish were between 10.3 and 38.5 cm total length with a mean of 26.1 cm. A total of 375 individuals were classified as females with a mean total length of 27.2 cm while 110 fish were classified as males with a mean total length of 23.4 cm. Structure and ultrastructure of oogenic stage in short mackerel Rastrelliger brachysoma (Teleostei: Scombidae)

Introduction: Structure, ultrastructural features and degeneration of oogenesis were first investigated in female Rastrelliger brachysoma as new candidate species for aquaculture by transmission electron microscopy. Materials and Methods: Specimens were naturally collected during the breeding season from Samut Songkhram Province, Thailand. Results: The ultrastructure of female oogenesis was principally divided into five stages based on the nuclear characterization and cytoplasmic organelles; (i) oogonium; (ii) previtellogenic; (iii) lipid and cortical alveolar; (iv) early and (v) late vitellogenic stages. Initially, oogonium was present within cell nest in the epithelial compartment. Its cell was supported by prefollicular cells. The multiple nucleoli in previtellogenic stage, referring to primary growth stage were the first to appear and they were scattered around the peripheral of nuclear membrane with the increasing number of cytoplasmic organelles. Some microvilli of granulosa cell initially protruded into the vitelline envelope. A simple layer of flattened granulosa and theca cells was also observed. The lipid and cortical alveolar stage under secondary growth oocyte was accumulated with two inclusions; the lipid droplets and cortical alveoli in the ooplasm. Another characterization, the increasing of numerous microvilli was also detected in the vitelline envelope. Finally, in the vitellogenic stage, a massive uptake and processing of proteins into yolk platelets due to embedding of the numerous microvilli in the largest vitelline envelope was observed. Oocyte degeneration in R. brachysoma was novel found especially oogonial and previtellogenic stages. Conclusion: Five oogenic stages of this fish are found with the changing of the arrangement of nucleus, cytoplasmic organelles and follicular complex, which will be applied to further studies.
