Ovarian development and spawning of Serra Spanish mackerel in coastal waters of Northeastern Brazil

Abstract: The Serra Spanish mackerel, Scomberomorus brasiliensis is an important fishery resource of the Atlantic Ocean and is a major component of artisanal fisheries in northern and northeastern Brazil. Ovarian development and spawning period of S. brasiliensis were investigated using both macroscopic and histological techniques. Mean monthly values of GSI and ovarian maturation indicate that the main spawning period occurs during the rainy season. Keywords: Serra Spanish mackerel, spawning period, ovarian development,… Show more

“…The histological characteristics of the oocytes in different development stages were also similar to those of other teleosts reported in the literature (Coward and Bromage, '98; Cek et al, 2001; Ravaglia and Maggese, 2002; Utoh et al, 2003; Nejedli et al, 2004; Van Der Molen and Matallanas, 2004; Abascal and Medina, 2005; Knight et al, 2007; Koc et al, 2008; Chelemal et al, 2009; Chellappa et al, 2010; Mohamed, 2010; Morris et al, 2011). …”

“…En regiones tropicales las lluvias podrían jugar un rol importante en determinar los ciclos reproductivos de peces. En general, los peces se reproducen cuando las condiciones ambientales son favorables para la supervivencia de las larvas proporcionándoles el alimento adecuado, y con esto propician su rápido crecimiento, lo cual contribuye a disminuir el número de depredadores (Chellappa et al, 2010).…”

“…One of the techniques, the gonadal histology has been first required and interestingly described in detail under light microscopy before entering to other strategies in view of the above, especially numerous investigations in the family Scombridae. Such as the most commercially important fish Scomberomorus brasiliensis (CHELLAPPA, LIMA, ARAŨJO et al, 2010), and Thunnus thymus (ABASCAL and MEDINA, 2005) were seen. However, only in ultrastructural study in teleost fish, it possible to investigate the details of gametogenic processing at cellular and organelles levels (GRIER, 2000).…”
