Helminthological records of six-banded armadillos Euphractus sexcinctus (Linnaeus, 1758) from the Brazilian semi-arid region, Patos county, Paraíba state, including new morphological data on Trichohelix tuberculata (Parona and Stossich, 1901) Ortlepp, 1922 and proposal of Hadrostrongylus ransomi nov. comb.

Abstract: This work aimed to evaluate the gastrointestinal helminthfauna composition of six-banded armadillos from the Brazilian semi-arid region. Gastrointestinal contents of six road-killed adult animals from Patos County, Paraíba State, were analyzed. Six species of nematodes, comprising five genera and four families, were recovered from the analyzed animals. New morphological data on Trichohelix tuberculata is given, along with a new taxonomical proposal for Hadrostrongylus ransomi (Travassos, 1935) n. comb. This is… Show more

“…Regarding the generic composition of the infections, 16 helminth species were identified, diverging from results found by other authors (VICENTE et al, 1997;HORTA-DUARTE et al, 2004;RODRIGUES et al, 2006;GRIESE 2007;RUAS et al, 2008), mainly according to the number of nematode species.…”

“…The only parasite species found in Tierra del Fuego, T. tuberculata (Parona & Stossich, 1902) (Nematoda, Trichostrongylina), is a specific parasite of Dasypodidae, with C. villosus, Chaetophractus vellerosus, Cabassous unicinctus and Euphractus sexcinctus their frequent hosts (Navone, 1987(Navone, , 1990Fujita et al, 1995;Hoppe et al, 2009). In Argentina, T. tuberculata is known from the central region of the country (provinces of Buenos Aires, Có rdoba, La Pampa and Santa Fe) (Navone, 1987(Navone, , 1990.…”

“…However, in the definition of Hadrostrongylus, all the characters used are shared with those of Delicata Travassos, 1935, with the only addition of ''synlophe with ventral-dorsal orientation'' and no reference is made to the presence or absence of lateral alae. Hoppe et al (2009) reported from E. sexcinctus a species they identified as D. ransomi, and described its synlophe as having 4 main ventral crests and 10 secondary smaller crests with ventraldorsal orientation. Probably based on these characters and on the absence of lateral alae, they transferred the species to Hadrostrongylus.…”

“…differs from D. abbai n. sp. mainly by the following characters: synlophe with 4 ventral ridges and 2 small lateral cuticular dilatations; morphology of the caudal bursa, with rays 8 longer than the dorsal ray and reaching the bursal margin and rays 2-3 shorter and less divergent; membrane of the genital cone strongly bilobate; and spicules unequal in size and bearing a lateral projection (Hoppe and Nascimento, 2007).…”
