The present study focuses on the structure and function of phytoplankton community during periods of marked changes in hydrological traits, influenced by an atypical climatic event (La Niña) and its impact on Armando Ribeiro Gonçalves Reservoir of Rio Grande do Norte, situated in the Caatinga biome of northeastern Brazil. The main questions addressed were: What are the effects of environmental factors on the temporal variation of Morphologically Based Functional Group (MBFG) of phytoplankton community? How does the composition of cyanobacterial species shift in relation to high and low trends of phytoplankton diversity? The samples were collected monthly during 2008-2009 and analyzed for pH, temperature, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen content and the nutrients, such as, nitrate-nitrogen, ammoniacal nitrogen, total nitrogen and orthophosphate. Phytoplankton samples were collected for both qualitative and quantitative analyses to evaluate species richness index and species diversity index. The data was divided into two distinct hydrodynamic periods of instability and stability. The results demonstrate considerable changes in dissolved oxygen content, water transparency and nitrogen nutrients, which directly influenced the MBFG of phytoplankton community in space and time. The instability of reservoir water was caused by heavy rainfall, which exerts atypical external disturbances. The seasonal variation of MBFG demonstrates a change in cyanobacterial composition and their diversity during instability and stability periods. MBFG VII, composed by colonial cyanobacteria with mucilage, was associated with reduced values of electrical conductance and alterations in pH. The predominance of filamentous species with heterocyst (MBFG III) occurs only during the hydrodynamic stability period and did not show significant association with analyzed parameters. The co-dominance of MBGFs III, V and VII along with high species diversity of phytoplankton community occurred during the second hydrodynamic instability period which was associated with the reduction in water temperature. It is concluded that the decrease in cyanobacterial species dominance and the general increase in the diversity of phytoplankton community are influenced by pluvial anomaly. The higher water level during the period of pluvial anomaly resulted in nutrient pulse and the mixing of water column in the reservoir, which determined the MBPG phytoplankton community distribution.Keywords: hydrodynamism, environmental factors, phytoplankton community, morphofunctional groups. Artificial lakes play an important role in water availability in tropical semi-arid Northeastern Brazil. However, in addition to the negative effects that dams have on the water quality of rivers, other practices such as discharge of untreated wastewater, intensive crop fertilization and fish farming have been contributing to water quality deterioration. Climate change may be another driver of water quality decrease. Increases in precipitation and drought intensities as well as temperature increase may redefine the dynamics of planktonic communities and favour species more adapted to the new environment. Water samples were collected in two reservoirs selected based on the recurrence of positive results for saxitoxins, Acarape do Meio (AM) and Sitios Novos (SN). In general, diversity in SN (1.08) was higher than in the AM (0.60). Phytoplankton dynamics in these reservoirs differ from other reservoirs in the same region of Brazil, in the sense that filamentous cyanobacteria are dominant. Furthermore, lower diversity, concentration and richness of chlorophyceae and bacillariophyceae were found in both reservoirs. Increase in diversity was observed during the intense rainy season of 2011, suggesting a slight improvement of water quality. A close inverse correlation between Cylindrospermopsis sp and other cyanobacteria was found in SN (R 2 = -0.862) and in AM (R 2 = -0.997) and the data collected demonstrates that a season with intensive rainfall may lead to lower cyanobacteria concentrations probably due to water dilution and higher flushing rates.Keywords: Artificial reservoirs; Freshwater cyanobacteria; Semi-arid regions; Temporal phytoplankton dynamics; Eutrophication. RESUMOOs lagos artificiais tem um papel primordial na disponibilidade hídrica no semi-árido Brasileiro. Entretanto, além dos efeitos negativos que os barramentos dos rios causam sobre a qualidade da água, a descarga de esgotos, a irrigação e a piscicultura intensivas vêm acentuando a deterioração da qualidade da água em um ritmo sem precedentes nesta região. A mudança climática é outro fator de impacto negativo na qualidade da água. O aumento da intensidade das precipitações pode redefinir a dinâmica das comunidades de plâncton e espécies mais adaptadas a ambientes extremamente variáveis. Os reservatórios estudados, Acarape do Meio (AM) e Sítios Novos (SN), foram selecionados com base na recorrência de resultados positivos para saxitoxinas. A dinâmicas do fitoplâncton encontrada, difere de outras áreas da mesma região, no sentido em que as cianobactérias filamentosas são dominantes. Baixas diversidade, concentração média e riqueza de Chlorophyceae e Bacillariophyceae foram encontrados em ambos os reservatórios, embora tenha sido observado um aumento durante o intenso período chuvoso de 2011, sugerindo uma ligeira melhoria da qualidade da água. The limnological features and the phytoplankton community of the Cachoeira Dourada reservoir were analyzed in December 2006, May 2007 and November 2007. Temporal changes in the taxonomic composition, density, diversity and dominance of species were analyzed in relation to climatic factors and the physical and chemical characteristics of the water. A positive correlation was found between some of the physical and chemical variables and the phytoplankton community. According to the CCA, variables such as the extent of the euphotic zone, temperature, pH, nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations directly affected the phytoplankton dynamics. Organisms belonging to the class Cyanophyceae were the most representative in all the sampling periods, comprising the functional groups K, S1, M and H. Hydrodynamics and seasonal fluctuations of environmental factors were the driving forces determining the composition and abundance of the algal assemblages. Despite the prevalence of Cyanobacteria, the reservoir is still oligotrophic. The absence of blooms and the relatively low population abundances indicated that the quality of the reservoir's water still lies within the limits required for its multiples uses.Keywords: Cachoeira Dourada, phytoplankton ecology, tropical reservoir, algal community. Estrutura da comunidade fitoplanctônica do reservatório de Cachoeira Dourada, GO/MG, Brasil ResumoAs características limnológicas e a comunidade fitoplanctônica do reservatório de Cachoeira Dourada foram analisadas nos meses de dezembro de 2006, maio de 2007 e novembro de 2007. As flutuações temporais na composição taxonômica, densidade, diversidade e dominância de espécies foram analisadas em relação aos fatores climáticos e às variáveis físicas e químicas da água. Uma correlação positiva foi encontrada entre algumas das variáveis físicas e químicas analisadas e a comunidade fitoplanctônica. De acordo com a CCA, variáveis como a extensão da zona eufótica, temperatura, pH, nitrogênio e fósforo influenciaram diretamente na dinâmica do fitoplâncton. Organismos pertencentes à classe Cyanophyceae foram as mais representativas em todos os períodos amostrais, abrangendo os grupos funcionais K, S1, M e H. A hidrodinâmica e a variação sazonal dos fatores ambientais foram as forças determinantes da composição e abundância das assembleias de algas. Apesar do predomínio de cianobactérias, o ambiente do reservatório ainda é oligotrófico. A ausência de florações e as abundâncias populacionais relativamente baixas indicaram que a qualidade da água do reservatório continua se mantendo dentro dos limites estipulados para seus usos múltiplos.Palavras-chave: Cachoeira Dourada, ecologia de fitoplâncton, reservatório tropical, comunidade algal.
