Do the seasonal forests in northeastern Brazil represent a single floristic unit?

Abstract: Floristic analyses (Principal Component Analysis and Analysis of Group Indicators) at the genus level were employed to characterize and compare seasonal forest formations in northeastern Brazil. The presence -absence of 248 genera of woody plants occurring in 24 floristic surveys was correlated with geomorphology and climatic variables. The analyses were consistent and point to the existence of two floristic groups of seasonal forests in the region, one more closely related to the Atlantic Coastal Forest (mata… Show more

“…Within its natural range (NE, SE and W Brazil, N Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia and C-S Peru), Ceiba speciosa is a very common tree typical of mature (but not final) dynamic stages of drought-tolerant semi-deciduous forest (Kennard, 2002;Oliveira-Filho & al., 2006) and the socalled cerrado, a tree savanna-like community (Ruggiero & al., 2002;Rodal & al., 2008), but it can thrive also along wet river valleys (Bianchini & al., 2000;Gibbs & Semir, 2003). This subtropical tree is perfectly adapted to stand a relatively dry season, which lasts from May to August.…”

“…Brazil is a continental country with six different biomes, Amazon, Atlantic Forest, Cerrado, Caatinga, Pantanal and Pampa [1], of which 3 are represented in the State of Bahia (Atlantic Forest, Caatinga, Cerrado) [2,3]. Traditional knowledge of medicinal plants used by indigenous populations of rural areas of Bahia has not received enough attention so far, although in northeastern Brazil there are ethnobotanical studies recently published [4][5][6][7][8].…”
