Seed shadow, seedling recruitment, and spatial distribution of Buchenavia capitata (Combretaceae) in a fragment of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest

Abstract: Here we describe the seed shadow, seedling recruitment, ontogenetic structure and spatial distribution of Buchenavia capitata (an emergent canopy tree) in a 380-ha fragment of the Atlantic forest in northeast Brazil. In particular, we examine seed distribution around 10 parental trees and both seedling recruitment and mortality, during an 18 month period beneath and around parental trees. Moreover, we describe: (1) B. capitata occurrence within treefall gaps; (2) population structure in terms of ontogenetic st… Show more

“…The principal problem facing a fragmented Atlantic rainforest is the limited dispersal or even extinction of tree species with large fruits (Silva and Tabarelli, 2000;Santos et al, 2006). We suggest that peccaries do not act as long distance dispersers for these plant species, but rather as predator.…”

“…Seed production is an event that varies between plants considerably due to the difference in fertility, loss of seeds before dispersal, the plant size and resource availability in the environment [3]. The distribution of individuals between the two study sites suggests environmental variation.…”

“…The dispersal pattern of a plant population depends on the interaction of two factors, seed dispersal and probability of survival of their seedlings [2]. The amount of seeds dispersed over long distances can reduce the likelihood of them reaching suitable habitat and there is no sapling recruitment [3].…”
