The velvet worm Peripatus sp. (Onychophora: Peripatidae) as a connectivity indicator in the cocoa landscape in southeast of the state of Bahia, Brazil, and its importance for conservation. Among the invertebrates, velvet worms are seen as a flag-taxon which the occurrence indicates well preserved areas with a high biological diversity. Their fragility is especially high, as they are sensitive to dehydrating. These organisms can be encountered in areas with a favorable and constantly wet microhabitat at the soil surface, with a layer of organic detritus. Due to their fragility and their reduced ability to dispersion, fragmented landscapes compromise the velvet worm surviving at medium term. Their survival will depend from the existence of a continuous litter layer in a relatively homogenous landscape, as it happens when forest remnants alternate with cocoa plantations.
