Reproductive biology of Astyanax janeiroensis (Osteichthyes, Characidae) from the Ubatiba River, Maricá, RJ, Brazil

Abstract: Aspects of the reproductive biology of Astyanax janeiroensis in the Ubatiba river in Maricá, RJ, Brazil were evaluated in order to ascertain whether the strategy adopted by the species is causally related to environmental variables. Specimens were collected on a monthly basis from October 1994 to September 1995, through electrofishing. The Sex ratio was not significantly different from the expected frequency of 1:1 (G = 1.29; p > 0.50); nonetheless, considering three standard length classes, significantly larg… Show more

“…The presence of paired, elongate, foliaceous, thick, and bulky organs, was observed in all treatments for A. bimaculatus, as well as in other Astyanax species (Mazzoni et al, 2005). In addition to these results, microscopic examination of gonads indicated a dynamic process of oogenesis, as described by Bazzoli & Rizzo (1990).…”

“…Within the Characidae, sexually dimorphic characters have been reported in several species. Most dimorphic characters are associated with sexual structures, such as the presence of hooks in anal and pelvic fins Dala-Corte, Fialho, 2014), sexual glands (Menezes, Weitzman, 2009;, or even fin shape ), but body shape (Ortega-Lara et al, 2002;Riehl, Baensch, 2007) and body size (Mazzoni et al, 2005;Mazzoni, Petito, 1999) have also been reported to differ. For H. coeruleus, aquarium observations of old-age individuals (approximately 7 cm SL) indicate differences between males and females (J.…”
