The effect of particle size on the leaching of Scirpus cubensis Poepp & Kunth

Abstract: An investigation was made on the effects of detritus particle size on leaching rates in organic matter, and the associated environmental changes caused by detritus re-cycling in an oxbow lake (Lagoa do Infernão). Experiments were conducted during the decay of an aquatic macrophyte specie, S. cubensis, which in turn led to the formation of colored compounds. The S. cubensis were collected from the Lagoa do Infernão and taken to the laboratory where they were washed, dried, and fractionated using a sieve pedolog… Show more

“…A set of equations was used to describe the mineralization (Equations 1 to 3) of E. azurea detritus (Bianchini Jr. and Antonio, 2003). The parameterizations were obtained by fitting the temporal evolution of POC, DOC and TIC; the fittings were performed using nonlinear regressions with the iterative algorithm of Levenberg-Marquardt, as suggested by Press et al (1993).…”

“…After the second week, dissolution practically ceased and immobilization prevailed. The kinetics model for electrolytes (parameterization in (Bianchini Jr. & Antonio, 2003). The discrepancies between theory and experimental data (r 2 : 0.50 to 0.68) may be attributed to the periodic oxygenation processes to which the bottles were submitted, part of the discrepancies is caused by the rapid liberation and assimilation of electrolytes.…”

“…The temporal variation of total electrolytes (TE) was fitted to a first-order kinetics model similar to the one described by Bianchini Jr. & Antonio (2003). Hence, the variation in leaching and uptake of TE can be described by Equation 3.…”
