Piscinoodinium pillulare (Schäperclaus, 1954) Lom, 1981 (Dinoflagellida) infection in cultivated freshwater fish from the Northeast region of São Paulo State, Brazil: parasitological and pathological aspects

Abstract: The Aquaculture Center of Unesp, Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil, received fishes for diagnosis from fish farmers reporting fish crowding at pond edges and in water inlets. Fifty-three out of 194 cases showed round to oval, immobile whitish structures, measuring up to 162 mm diameter, identified as the dinoflagellate Piscinoodinium pillulare. “…Leonardo et al (2001) alimentaram larvas de tilápias com diferentes níveis de vitamina C, e observaram hipertrofia e hiperplasia das células mucosas nos filamentos branquiais das larvas que não ingeriram vitamina C. Berntssen et al (1997) expuseram salmão atlântico (Salmo salar) em ambientes aquáticos com diferentes concentrações de alumínio e observaram um aumento do número de célu-las mucosas contendo mucinas ácidas na brânquia. Martins et al (2001) analisaram brânquias de várias espécies como tambacu híbrido, pacu, tambaqui, piauçu, tilápia e curimbatá infectado por parasitas (dinoflagelados), e constataram aumento da produção de muco em todas as espécies.
