Astyanax fasciatus as bioindicator of water pollution of Rio dos Sinos, RS, Brazil

Abstract: The effects of an increasing downriver pollution gradient on the reproductive system of Astyanax fasciatus were investigated in the Rio dos Sinos, RS. The comparison of mean oocyte diameters, gonadal indices and gonado-somatic relationships of specimens captured in polluted areas with individuals from unpolluted reference sites revealed a significant decrease of these parameters with increasing water pollution. High loads of organic and industrial sewage are considered responsible for these effects. Condition … Show more

“…Colonisation, together with an intensive exploitation of natural resources, livestock farming, the use of fertilisers and agrochemicals and urbanisation have increased the amount of waste, domestic sewage and industrial effluents found in the aquatic ecosystems of this region (Denardin and Sulzbach, 2005), causing degradation of the water resources (Schuster and Souza-Franco, 2003;Dal Pissol and Souza-Franco, 2003;Bottin et al, 2007;Bonai et al, 2009). Organic pollution is a primary factor associated with the loss of diversity and the loss of ecological balance in an ecosystem (Meirelles-Pereira et al, 2005;Araújo and Tejerina-Garro, 2007;Schulz andMartins-Junior, 2001, McKie et al, 2009). The natural characteristics of the Santa Catarina western region (Schuster and Souza-Franco, 2003;Dal Pissol and Souza-Franco, 2003;Bottin et al, 2007;Bonai et al, 2009) have changed primarily because of pollution and deforestation.…”

“…According to Schulz and Martins-Junior (2001), heavy metals from metallurgy and tanneries raise concerns, although a study of the Sinos River waters in the city of Novo Hamburgo conducted by Nascimento and Naime (2009) did not find any contamination by total chromium, nickel or lead in the samples analysed, differently from findings reported by Robaina et al (2002), who found lead, chromium and nickel in sediments of streams that flow into the Sinos River.Another study, conducted in 2007 and 2008 in four sites of the basin, found that the Sinos River was not proper for water catchment for human consumption, according to CONAMA Resolution no. 357, in the lower basin reach (Blume et al, 2010).…”

“…The presence of thermotolerant coliforms is not conclusive evidence that the greatest contribution to pollution at these sites is made by untreated household sewage, as this parameter indicates the presence of feces of warm blood animals. It is not possible to track the source of this pollution, which may also be associated with the economic activity in the region of Santo Antônio da Patrulha, Rolante and Taquara, where meat and dairy cattle are raised (Schulz and Martins-Junior, 2001).…”

“…Aquatic ecosystems, in particular, have been significantly altered as a result of multiple environmental impacts caused by human activities such as mining, construction of dams and reservoirs, diversion of the natural course of rivers, discharge of raw sewage and industrial effluents, deforestation and inappropriate land use in riparian areas and floodplains, overfishing, introduction of exotic species, among others (OLIVEIRA; BENNEMANN, 2005;SCHULZ;MARTINS-JUNIOR, 2001). …”
