Prevalence and histopathology of Neoechinorhynchus curemai Noronha, 1973 (Acanthocephala: Neoechinorhynchidae) in Prochilodus lineatus Valenciennes, 1836 from Volta Grande Reservoir, MG, Brazil

Abstract: The present work studied the prevalence and histopathology of Neoechinorhynchus curemai Noronha, 1973 (Acanthocephala; Neoechinorhynchidae) from curimbatá, Prochilodus lineatus Valenciennes, 1836. Eighteen fishes with averages of 46.7 +/- 1.1 cm length and 1,674.8 +/- 75.6 g weight were collected with net, bimonthly from December 1995 thru December 1996 in the hydroelectric power station of Volta Grande Reservoir (Cemig), Minas Gerais, Brazil. From analysed fishes, 15 were infected with acanthocephalans in the… Show more

“…Neoechinorhynchus curemai -infected P. lineatus showed severe inflammatory response in the submucosa, associated with oedema and mononuclear infiltration, and complete desquamation of the intestinal epithelium with severe hyperplasia and hypertrophy of the goblet cells (Martins et al ., 2001). Many other teleosts have shown higher monocyte counts associated with infection: Leporinus macrocephalus Garavelo & Britski 1988 with Goezia leporine (Martins et al ., 2004) and Paralichthys olivaceus (Temminck & Schlegel, 1846) with Neoheterobothrium hirame (Nakayasu et al ., 2005).…”

“…Few studies related to the parasite ecology of this species on the Upper Paraná River floodplain have been carried out (Ranzani-Paiva, et al, 2000). A recent work related to the parasite ecology of this species was developed by Martins et al (2001). Therefore, the study of the seasonal dynamics of parasitism levels serves as a tool to understand broad aspects that determine the population biology of the host-parasite system (Chubb, 1982).…”

“…N. buttnerae can cause intestinal obstruction and intestinal wall lesions that lead to the fish death (Martins et al, 2001;Santos et al, 2013). Although several studies have reported the occurrence of this parasite in C. macropomum, its impact on production systems was not quantified.…”
