Comportamento de chamamento de Thyrinteina arnobia (Stoll) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) em Psidium guajava, Eucalyptus grandis e em dieta artificial

Abstract: -This work was carried out to determine and compare the effects of three diets (Psidium guajava and Eucalyptus grandis host-plant leaves and artificial diet) on the calling behavior and on the temporal pattern of calling behavior of Thyrinteina arnobia (Stoll). All activities of virgin females during six scotophases were observed in the laboratory at 5min. intervals until the females stopped calling in the following photophase, at 22 ± 1 o C, 70 ± 5% RH and 10h scotophase. The diets affected the calling behavi… Show more

“…Similar behaviour was recorded for potato stem borer, H. micacea (West et al 1984). In contrast to our results, changes in the onset of calling behaviour with age have been recorded for other lepidopteran species (Turgeon and McNeil 1982;Batista-Pereira et al 2004;Zarbin et al 2007a, b). Swier et al (1977) suggested that by calling earlier A. ipsilon females increased their probability of mating by being the Wrst to attract the males.…”

“…Biological data on T. arnobia, reared on leaves of Eucalyptus spp, have been recorded by a number of groups. [2][3][4][5][6] Several strategies have been tried and considerable effort spent on the development of methods to control this pest, yet no practical and environmentally acceptable one currently exists. Control is made very difficult by the huge area of plantations and by the height of the trees.…”

“…The calling behavior during the first scotophase may be related to the reproductive maturity at emergence, since the association of pheromone production and sexual maturity has been described for various lepidopteran species (Webster & Cardé 1982;Babilis & Mazomenos 1992, Delisle & Royer 2004, Del Mazo-Cancino et al 2004, Gómez & Rojas 2006, Da Silva et al 2006. This behavior may also be associated with an increase in the probability of mating by being the first in attracting males (Turgeon & McNeil 1982, Gadenne 1993, Batista-Pereira et al 2004, Zarbin et al 2007.…”
