Show more

“…The data of the present study are in agreement with the studies by Earnest et al (15) , which did not find significant alterations of the bilirubin fractions when supplementation occurred with 20g/ day for five days and 10g on the 51 remaining days. None responses different from the already existing in the literature about the hepatic function was found (5,10,(15)(16)(17) . The lipid profile (table 6) did not suffer significant alterations when the Pre and Post results were compared; however, when the groups were compared, significant improvement in the total cholesterol values was observed for the CRE2 group (p = 0.0398).…”

“…Shao and Hathcock (4) , after extensive work, verified that after two and a half decades of experimental and clinical studies with different dosage and times of supplementation, in only two cases of volunteers supplemented with creatine renal complication have been reported, but which came from periods previous to these experiments. However, despite the strong evidence of this substance as an ergogenic agent, it is still not unkown about possible hepatic and renal alterations derived from creatine supplementation, demanding hence further studies on this supplementation safety (2,5,6) . A hypothesis that creatine supplementation modifies the renal and hepatic functions in individuals clinically normal is brought about from the shortage of evidence on the potential adverse effects derived from the supplementation with monohydrate creatine in the hepatic and renal function.…”

“…The animals were kept in individual metabolic cages with a controlled 12-hour light-dark cycle during the 14 days of the experiment and they were given ad libitum access to water and food 32 . It was an air-conditioned room, with a controlled temperature of 22 + 1°C, with little noise and relative humidity of the air within the limits standardized by the Vivarium.…”

“…However, due to its intense use as a nutritional supplement, it is necessary to conduct a careful evaluation on the possible toxicity to metabolism and liver morphology, as well as to renal function, as a result from such supplementation, since its toxicological effects are still controversial in scientific literature 30 . Studies have shown that creatine supplementation did not cause damage to kidney and liver function in rats 31,32 . However, some experimental and clinical studies have associated its supplementation to some side effects, such as the appearance of hepatitis, harmful effects on glomerular filtration rate and on renal plasma flow 33,34 .…”
