Electromyography (EMG) is the standard technology for monitoring muscle activity in laboratory environments, either using surface electrodes or fine wire electrodes inserted into the muscle. Due to limitations such as cost, complexity, and technical factors, including skin impedance with surface EMG and the invasive nature of fine wire electrodes, EMG is impractical for use outside of a laboratory environment. Mechanomyography (MMG) is an alternative to EMG, which shows promise in pervasive applications. The present study used an exerting squat-based task to induce muscle fatigue. MMG and EMG amplitude and frequency were compared before, during, and after the squatting task. Combining MMG with inertial measurement unit (IMU) data enabled segmentation of muscle activity at specific points: entering, holding, and exiting the squat. Results show MMG measures of muscle activity were similar to EMG in timing, duration, and magnitude during the fatigue task. The size, cost, unobtrusive nature, and usability of the MMG/IMU technology used, paired with the similar results compared to EMG, suggest that such a system could be suitable in uncontrolled natural environments such as within the home.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiological profile of patients with traumatic hip dislocation treated in our Institute from November/2012 to July/2013. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study based on interviews and involving 43 patients who suffered traumatic hip dislocation was conducted. RESULTS: The mean age of patients was 34.4 years old and 90.7% were male. Regarding the mechanism of injury, 95% involved traffic accidents. The posterior dislocation of the hip was the most common injury (93%). Associated lesions were observed in 74.4% of patients, hip fractures being the most frequent. The time span between accident and dislocation reduction was less than 6 hours in 37.2% of patients, between 6 and 12 hours in 32.5% and over 12 hours in 30.3%, ranging from 1 hour to 15 days. A fraction of 90.7% of patients was submitted to closed reduction. CONCLUSION: Traumatic hip dislocation affected mostly young adults, victims of traffic accidents. The posterior dislocation of the hip was the most frequent injury and closed reduction was performed in 90.7% of patients. The time span between accident and dislocation reduction was less than 12 hours in most patients. Level of Evidence III, Study of Nonconsecutive Patients.

Importancia de la relación anatómica entre el nervio iquiático y el margen posterior del acetábulo en la luxación posterior de la cadera. Int. J. Morphol., 30(3):843-846, 2012. RESUMEN: La luxación posterior de la articulación de la cadera es un trauma que puede sufrir una buena parte de la población, donde se puede comprometer el nervio isquiático, produciendo serios problemas en la vida del individuo afectado. El conocimiento de la relación anatómica entre el nervio isquiático y el margen posterior del acetábulo propiciará um diagnóstico preciso y precoz de esta lesión. Con el objetivo de estudiar la relación topográfica del nervio isquiático con el margen posterior del acetábulo y entregar antece-dentes anatómicos para las cirugías ortopédicas en caso de luxaciones posteriores de la cadera, se estudiaron 40 miembros inferiores formolizados, de cadáveres humanos, adultos y de ambos sexos, localizados en los laboratorios de anatomía topográfica de la Universi-dad Estadual de Ciencias de la Salud de Alagoas, Brasil. En 19 miembros inferiores (47,7%) el nervio isquiático pasó directamente sobre el margen posterior del acetábulo y en los 21 restantes (53,3%), el nervio estuvo distante del margen mencionado, distancia que varió de 6 a 49 mm. Los resultados obtenidos muestran la estrecha relación entre el nervio isquiático y el margen acetabular, lo que acrecienta la posibilidad de lesión del nervio em los casos de luxación posterior de la cadera. PALABRAS CLAVE: Nervio isquiático; Acetábulo; Luxación de cadera. INTRODUCCION El conocimiento de las relaciones anatómicas entre la articulación de la cadera y el nervio isquiático son de ex-trema importancia como soporte morfológico para la con-ducta en el tratamiento de diversas lesiones. Este nervio es ramo terminal del plexo sacro y también el de mayor diá-metro del cuerpo humano (Latarjet & Ruiz Liard, 1996). El nervio isquiático pasa a través del foramen isquiático mayor , inferiormente al músculo piriforme para entrar em la región glútea. El acetábulo se articula con la cabeza del fé-mur y tiene uma estrecha relación con el nervio isquiático (Moore & Dalley, 2011). Los traumatismos de miembros inferiores son fre-cuentes y las lesiones que involucran a la articulación de la cadera son causadas por golpes de alta violencia externa y pueden producir luxaciones que son clasificadas como an-teriores, posteriores o centrales (Canto et al., 1993).
