Background Changes in hormonal levels during the menstrual cycle are known to affect muscle electromyographic (EMG) activity, but no studies have investigated the effect of hormonal changes on the EMG activity of muscles around the knee in patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). Objective To evaluate the EMG activity of the vastus medialis obliquus (VMO) and vastus lateralis (VL) muscles during toe rise and heel rock tasks in different phases of the menstrual cycle in women with PFPS. Design Cross sectional study. Setting Rehabilitation Research Center at the School of Rehabilitation Sciences of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. Participants Ten women with PFPS between 18 and 40 years of age. Intervention Not applicable. Main Outcome Measures The VL/VMO amplitude ratio and differences between onset (onset VL−onset VMO) of vastii muscle activity were measured in the affected limb during rise and rock tasks in the follicular and ovulatory phases of the menstrual cycle. The signals were analyzed with MATLAB software. Results During both tasks, there were no significant changes in onset differences in vastii muscles between the ovulatory and follicular phases. However, the amplitude ratio (VL/VMO) was significantly lower in the ovulatory phase compared to the follicular phase (P = .035 for rise tasks and .010 for rock tasks). Conclusion The menstrual cycle may affect some EMG parameters. These factors can be taken into account when planning sports and rehabilitation training programs.

RESUMOObjetivo: este trabalho se propõe a investigar a atividade elétrica dos músculos Vasto medial oblíquo (VMO) e Vasto Lateral (VL) e o alinhamento da patela em indivíduos com a SDPF. Material e Métodos: procedeu-se com a avaliação física e eletromiográfica de 20 pacientes portadores e 8 sedentários não portadores da síndrome. Utilizou-se o aparelho de biofeedback eletromiográfico com dois canais, um no músculo VMO e outro no VL. Realizaram-se três contrações isométricas em cada joelho nos ângulos de 120º e 180º, com duração de dez segundos e repouso de trinta segundos. Quanto à medida radiológica, o deslocamento da patela foi mensurado através de exame radiológico pelo Método Bilateral de Merchant. Resultados: Não houve diferença significativa na relação VMO/VL tanto para os sujeitos clinicamente saudáveis quanto para pessoas com a SDPF, nos diferentes ângulos de contração. A análise radiológica revelou valores menores que os valores médios sugeridos na literatura para o Ângulo do Sulco (AS), o Ângulo de Congruência (AC) e o Ângulo de Inclinação Patelar (AIP). Conclusão: Nas condições experimentais realizadas, verificou-se que sujeitos clinicamente normais e com SDPF apresentaram relação VMO/VL similar para contração isométrica nos ângulos de 120° e 180°. A avaliação radiológica realizada para este trabalho apresentou resultados diferentes dos encontrados na literatura. DESCRITORESSíndrome da Dor Patelofemoral. Biofeedback. Eletromiografia. ABSTRACTObjective: This study aims to investigate the electrical activity of the muscles vastus medialis oblique (VMO) and vastus lateralis (VL) and patellar alignment in subjects with PFPS. Methods: It was carried out a physical and electromyographic evaluation of 20 patients affected by the syndrome and 8 sedentary non-affected ones. Electromyography was performed using a biofeedback device with two channels, one in the VMO and another in the VL. There were three isometric contractions in each knee at angles of 120º and 180º, with duration of ten seconds and rest for thirty seconds. The lateralization of the patella was measured by X-rays by the Method of Bilateral Merchant. Results: There was no significant difference in the VMO / VL for both clinically healthy subjects and for people with PFPS at the different angles of contraction. The radiological analysis showed lower values than the mean values suggested in the literature for the Angle of the Sulcus, Angle of Congruence and Angle of Patellar Inclination. Conclusion: According to the experimental conditions, it was found that healthy subjects and those with PFPS showed a relationship VMO / VL similar regarding isometric contractions at angles of 120° and 180°. The radiographic evaluation in this study showed results different from those of the literature. DESCRIPTORS

Purpose: to present a proposal of a surface electromyography evaluation method for cervical muscles specific and detailed protocol, with a standardized collection method of electrical signal in these muscles. Method: the researchers took as reference the existing publications about this subject which evidenced a need for standardization, clarity, better reproducibility and greater specificity for the surface electromyography evaluation of the upper trapezium and sternocleidomastoid muscles fibers. The proposal preparation process for the current protocol included the cleaning of the target area, placing the electrodes, required tasks in order to collect and register the electrical signal and interpretation of the electromyography signal parameters. This evaluation method was carried out in 24 healthy volunteers of both genders, with an average age of 26 years. We used the electromyography Miotool 400 with 4 channels. Result: an evaluation surface electromyography method for upper trapezium and sternocleidomastoid muscles fibers was developed and tested in order to determine the best form of electrical signal data collection for these muscles. Conclusion: we submitted a protocol proposal to evaluate the cervical muscles by a surface electromyography, allowing the healthy professionals and researchers to get more information about this electrical potential evaluation method for the sternocleidomastoid and the upper trapezium muscles fibers. This knowledge will be an adjuvant in a more specific therapy.
