Biodegradation of kerosene: Study of growth optimization and metabolic fate of P. janthinellum SDX7

Abstract: Penicillum janthinellum SDX7 was isolated from aged petroleum hydrocarbon-affected soil at the site of Anand, Gujarat, India, and was tested for different pH, temperature, agitation and concentrations for optimal growth of the isolate that was capable of degrading upto 95%, 63% and 58% of 1%, 3% and 5% kerosene, respectively, after a period of 16 days, at optimal growth conditions of pH 6.0, 30 °C and 180 rpm agitation. The GC/MS chromatograms revealed that then-alkane fractions are easily degraded; however, t… Show more

“…Besides the culture medium, the amount of pollutants in the submerged fermentation is another vital factor that affects the pollutant removal efficiency through impacting microbial metabolic activity and growth 24 . The greater gentamicin removal efficiency (by AMQD4) was achieved at the lower initial concentrations of gentamicin (50–100 mg L −1 ) in this study, implying that microbial activity could be inhibited by higher concentrations of gentamicin, similar to the report on the biodegradation of oxytetracycline by Pleurotusostreatus mycelium 5 .…”

“…The mixing quality at high agitation speed, more than 100 rpm proved to give negative effect on the diffusion rate of nutrients and carbazole into the matrix of gellan gum gel. The trend will be similar if tested with the free cell where the cells would not have high efficiency in nutrient and carbazole absorption [10].…”

“…World total kerosene consumption for all purposes is equivalent to about 1.2 million barrels per day [7]. However, due to its regular and increased use in many homes today, a considerable amount is released to the environment [3,8]. In Nigeria, petroleum products are mostly transported by land and this has increased the risk of spillage due to bad road networks.…”
