Extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing enterobacteriaceae in community-acquired urinary tract infections in São Luís, Brazil

Abstract: The number of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae in community-acquired urinary tract infections worldwide is probably underestimated because of the technical difficulties encountered with their detection. In this study, out of 5,672 urine samples analyzed, 916 were positive for uropathogens, 472 of them being enterobacteria of which 7.6% produced β-lactamases. Analysis of the isolated from 36 patients showed a high level of antibiotic resistance, with 52.7% and 80.5% of isolates expressing blaTEM and blaCTX-M, … Show more

“…5 ies (21,29,31). A study conducted in Brazil reported a higher resistance rate of 35% for nitrofurantoin in ESBL-producing E. coli (19). Also a review article from Turkey showed similar susceptibility rates, just as in our study for E. coli (20), suggesting the use of nitrofurantoin for the first-line empirical oral treatment of community-acquired uncomplicated UTIs.…”

“…The rate of ESBL-producing E. coli strains in Canada was 5.5 out of 100,000 people, 71% of which was due to community-acquired infections (13). The rate of community-acquired ESBL-producing E. coli infections in Israel was reported 57.8% in 2004 (14), while these rates were 1.5% -7.6% in Brazil, 3.5% in Italy, and 4.5% in Saudi Arabia (15). The ESBL rate was 13.3% in the studied hospital, which seemed about 8% lower than that of reported by PHI-Turkey and relatively higher than that of the developed Western countries (16).…”
