Brucella spp. isolation from dogs from commercial breeding kennels in São Paulo state, Brazil

Abstract: Dogs from 12 commercial breeding kennels were submitted to clinical investigation and laboratorial tests for diagnosis of Brucella spp. infection. =1.48 and p=0.2230). Within 12 kennels, seven had at least one dog positive by blood culture and nine had at least one animal positive by AGID. The association of epidemiological data with direct and indirect methods of diagnosis is necessary to perform a definitive diagnosis of Brucella infection in dogs, as positive results by AGID can be consequence of non-speci… Show more

“…The infected female can produce consecutive abortions and present litters of sick-born pups that die a few hours to more than one month after delivery. Birth of apparently normal offspring who develop the disease later can occur [82][83][84][85][86][87]. Abortions, premature litters and conception failures are observed in infected kennels [81,88].…”

“…Canine brucellosis caused by Brucella canis is one of these factors and enlargement of lymph nodes, uveitis, osteomyelitis, polyarthritis, glomerulonephritis, pyogranulomatous dermatitis, epididymitis, orchitis, scrotal dermatitis (sometimes scrotal necrosis) are other clinical signs of this infection [3][4][5][6] . This letter is written to underline the possibility of canine brucellosis caused by other Brucella species, and to share an interesting case of dog brucellosis originated from ruminants with colleagues.…”

“…In the region of Botucatu in the state of São Paulo, the prevalence was 0.84% using population and diagnostic test similar to that used in the previous study . Keid et al (2004) studied the prevalence of brucellosis in 12 commercial kennels in São Paulo state, where the seroprevalence by AGID ranged from 40 to 77%. When blood culture analysis was used instead, the prevalence ranged from 2.7 to 54.54%.…”
