The objective of our work was to identify the prey that offers optimum production of the predator, Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas). The cost of predator production was determined for each prey. We test the hypothesis that prey types supporting optimal development do not facilitate cost-effective rearing of P. nigrispinus. Second-instar nymphs of P. nigrispinus were reared in 1000-ml transparent plastic containers and maintained under controlled conditions (temperature, 25 ± 1°C; photophase duration, 12 h; relative humidity, 70 ± 10%), and the following biological aspects were evaluated: nymph viability, length of the nymphal period, and weight of fifth-instar nymphs. The adults were isolated in pairs (one female and one male) in Petri dishes, and the following biological aspects were evaluated: lifespan, adult weight after emergence, number of eggs per female, egg mass in females, number of eggs per egg mass, durations of the pre-oviposition, oviposition, and post-oviposition periods, viability, and length of the embryonic period. On the basis of our results, we conclude that the prey that leads to optimal development of P. nigrispinus is the larvae of Diatraea saccharalis (Fabr.), and the most cost effective prey for rearing P. nigrispinus is the larvae of Musca domestica L.
The pyometra is a disease that affects middle age and elderly female dogs during diestrus. Hormonal, microbiological, biochemical and hematological aspects are well described. However, few studies have evaluated the role of each in the prognosis of canine pyometra. The aim of this study was to identify markers associated with clinical worsening of dogs with pyometra. We prospectively evaluated 80 dogs with pyometra treated surgically. Group 1 consisted of dogs that were discharged within 48 hours after surgery and Group 2 consisted of those who required prolonged hospitalization or died. The findings of hematological, biochemical and blood lactate levels were compared between groups and variables such as bacterial multidrug resistance, systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), hyperlactatemia and increased creatinine were analyzed through the dispersion of frequencies between groups. Among the variables studied, the presence of SIRS and elevated serum creatinine >2.5mg/mL were effective in predicting the worsening of the disease and can be used as prognostic markers of canine pyometra. Palavras-chave: avaliação econômica, ciclos de restrição alimentar e realimentação, crescimento, custos com alimentação Evaluation of the Growth and Feeding Costs of Pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) Submitted to Alternate Cycles of Feeding Restriction and RefeedingABSTRACT -The present study evaluated the effects of alternating food restriction and refeeding cycles on the growth of pacu, during the growout phase and the viability of this practice in the commercial production of the species. Juvenile fish were distributed in 3 tanks and submitted to different feeding strategies: group A (fed ad libitum daily), B (food restricted to 4 weeks and refed for 9 weeks) and C (food restricted to 6 weeks and refed for 7 weeks) totalizing 13 weeks per cycle (4 experimental cycles). At the end of each feeding cycle, 20 fish per treatment were sampled and the biometric data were registered. Values of weight, total length and condition factor (K) were submitted to ANOVA and the averages were compared by Duncan test. The results showed that the treatment C presented better results only in autumn/winter periods, promoting better growth, lower cost ration, lower food conversion and better partial net income. Otherwise, during the warmer periods of the year (spring/summer) other feeding strategies must be tested, utilizing shorter periods of food restriction. Regarding to the annual production, the treatment A showed higher biomass, although higher feeding costs. With the increase in the temperature, the growth of the fish from the other treatments was delayed.
