Strains of Lentinula edodes suppress growth of phytopathogenic fungi and inhibit Alagoas serotype of vesicular stomatitis virus

Abstract: Four Lentinula edodes strains (Le10, 46, K2, Assai) were assessed for their antagonistic effect on four filamentous fungus species of agricultural importance (Helminthosporium euphorbiae, Helminthosporium sp, Fusarium solani and Phomopsis sojae) and on Alagoas serotype of Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSA). The L. edodes strains studied had variable effects on the filamentous fungi and on VSA. The K2 and Le10 strains were antagonistic on the fungi assessed and the 46 and K2 strains were efficient on the Vesicula… Show more

“…Antibiotic, anti-carcinogenic, anticancer, antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral, antidiabetic, hypolipidemic compounds have been isolated intracellularly (fruiting body and mycelia) and extracellularly (culture media) from L. edodes. Some of these substances were lentinan, lectin and eritadenine [30,[36][37][38][39][40]. The shiitake mushroom is used medicinally for diseases involving depressed immune function (including AIDS), cancer, diabetes, environmental allergies, fungal infection, frequent flu and colds, bronchial inflammation, and regulating urinary incontinence.…”

“…The basidiomycete Lentinula edodes, known as shiitake, is one of these well-studied and best-characterized mushroom species used for medicinal purposes. This species has been cultivated for centuries (14) and contains active biological compounds with antimicrobial (6,7,8), antitumoral (20,21) and antiviral activity (15,19). Antifungal, antithrombotic and anti-cholesterol effects have also been described in L. edodes (15,17).…”

“…This compound inhibits the growth of Trichoderma sp (Tokimoto et al, 1987) and Grampositive bacteria (Komemushi et al, 1996). The antimicrobial activity of L. edodes has been confirmed against the Gram-positive and Gramnegative bacteria, filamentous fungi, yeast and viruses (Chihara et al, 1969;Komemushi et al, 1995;Hirasawa et al, 1999;Pacumbaba et al 1999;Sasaki et al, 2001;Hatvani, 2001;Ishikawa et al, 2001;Hassegawa et al, 2005). There is some evidence that substrate composition can influence the chemical composition of the mushrooms (Manzi et al, 1999), but little is known about its nutritional value (Vetter, 1994).…”
