Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics (shape of dental arches, overjet and overbite) of the primary dentition of 6- to 39-month-old children from four nurseries of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and to associate them to gender and dentition phase. It was observed that 68.6% of the children presented round upper arch, while 31.4% had triangular upper arch; 92% of the children presented U-shaped lower arch and 8% had square-shaped lower arch. Moderate overjet was observed in 38.3% of the children, a… Show more

“…In the preliminary stage of occlusal establishment, the lower dental arch is located in a distal position, exhibiting a vertical or distal terminal plane for the primary molars [25], corresponding to Angle’s II occlusion for the permanent dentition. Children with primary dentition usually have a higher risk of developing increased overjet.…”

“…The genetic factor is predominant in the growth and development pattern of arches, also influenced by environmental factors, oral functions, breathing pattern and nutritional quality [10,11]. With regard to occlusion of the deciduous dentition, functional factors are considered determinants for the development of malocclusions [11].…”
