Characterization of clay deposit in the central region of Piauí for use in the ceramic industry

Abstract: The clay ceramics industry comprises materials used in construction (bricks, tiles, and expanded clay, among others), is of great importance for Brazilian economic development, and the industry is seeking new sources of raw material, mainly clay. The present work aims to characterize a clay deposit located in the central region of the state of Piauí, to make feasible its use as ceramic raw material, seeking to boost the clay ceramics industry. The chemical composition, the crystalline phases, and the plasticit… Show more

“…The quartz present in the clay is a component that acts as a non-plastic and inert raw material during the firing process (Racanelli et al, 2020). Orthoclase is the main raw material used as flux and provides great benefits to the ceramic mixture (Almeida et al, 2020). Therefore, the mineralogical analysis is in agreement with the chemical analysis.…”

“…The presence of fluxing oxides such as CaO, MgO, K2O and Fe2O3 contributes to the firing stage by promoting the formation of liquid phase necessary for particle consolidation, decreasing porosity and increasing linear firing shrinkage (Almeida et al, 2020;Cipriano & Ferraz, 2019;Racanelli et al, 2020). The high K2O content of the clays under study favors densification and provides mechanical strength to red ceramics (Nicolite, 2017;Silva et al, 2018).…”

“…To this end, many works investigated including dimension stone residues in red ceramics products [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. The term 'red ceramic' includes several products with clays that contain iron oxides and hydroxides, responsible for the reddish color of the pieces after firing.…”
