Cold metal transfer welding of AA1050 aluminum thin sheets

Abstract: This study was aimed to investigate the welding parameters on mechanical behavior of 2 mm thick AA1050 sheet materials joined by cold metal transfer (CMT) method. Macro structural examination showed that decreasing heat input decreased the pore size in the weld metal. Tensile test was applied and failure occurred in heat affected zone of aluminum sheet metal. Maximum tensile strength was found in the sample with minimum heat input. Heat affected zone was observed explicitly in the sample produced with the maxi… Show more

“…Direct current electrode negative (DCEN) results in thicker welds with an unstable arc and frequent arc outages. THI has a substantial influence on the weldment (WM) properties, and it has a huge consequence for the cooling rate of the WM [1]. It can be computed from the equation given below [25].…”

“…metal inert gas (MIG). As the word suggests, 'cold' refers to fusion welding technique only, but it has a very low 'thermal heat input' (THI) with negligible distortion due to nonzero current at the time of short circuiting [1]. The main innovation in CMT is in its wire movement assimilation.…”

“…Currently, research in different industries is directed towards the reduction of CO 2 emissions. The combination of heterogeneous materials is necessary to reduce the weight of the structures and CO 2 emissions [7][8][9]. Engineers are increasingly looking to join different material types ensuring good mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, and sealing function [10,11].…”

“…Since the arc is always short and the average current level is low, the amount of energy (heat) transferred to the part is usually very small. The CMT Õ version of GMAW has been widely and effectively exploited for thin sheet 12,13 and dissimilar metal joining [14][15][16] and for additive manufacturing. [17][18][19] In the case of dissimilar metal joining, it is possible to observe that the process is capable of forming robust joints without causing extensive melting of the higher-melting-point material, but it is adequately capable of melting the other material, which has a lower melting point, and of course, also the electrodewire.…”
