A study was conducted at the teaching and research farm of the Faculty of Bioresources and Food Industry at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) with an objective of determining the best rates for vermicompost application on red seedless watermelon var. Crimson sweet. In this research, watermelon crimson red flesh seedless variety was used as planting materials and different application rates of vermicompost were the major factor of the experiment. The research was a potted layout experiment in a completely randomized design (CRD). Sixteen (16) pots were randomly arranged in a nursery and 10 kg of BRIS soil was added in to each pot until 10 cm of soil furrow slice was achieved. Application of vermicompost at the rates of 5, 10, 15, 20 t ha-1 and untreated control were applied, with four replications each, single plant was taken as an experimental unit from each replicate. Vermicompost treatment at the rate of 15 t ha-1 increased stomatal conductance, transpiration rate and the least days required to 50% flowering was significantly different compared with other treatments and control. The vermicompost application at the rate of 20 t ha-1 positively influences leaf area, net photosynthetic rate, internal carbon dioxide, number of flowers and fruits weight of watermelon. This findings also revealed that quality properties of watermelon like rind thickeness, TSS, pH, anthocyanin, juice and ash contents were improved with the application rate of 20 t ha-1. Vermicompost application rate of 15-20 t ha-1 is recommended for watermelon production.

This study was designed to observe the effects of different application rates of inorganic fertilizers on growth, yield and quality of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) under BRIS soil condition. The field experiment was conducted during July, 2014 to April, 2015 at the teaching and research farm of University Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), Besut Campus, Terengganu. Performance of okra variety Singa 979 was assessed by application of NPK at different rates (0 kg ha -1 (control), 150 kg ha, 170 kg ha . The treatments were fitted in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) replicated thrice. Data collected for growth and yields performances included plant height, number of leaf/plant, leaf area, number of branch/plant, chlorophyll content, photosynthesis rate, transpiration rate, internal CO 2 , stomatal conductance, number of flower/plant, number of pod/plant, weight of pod, number of seed/pod and total soluble solid (TSS) of the pods. Based on the results obtained from this experiment, application of NPK at the rates of 190 kg ha -1 and 210 kg ha -1 shows the highest growth and yield performance. It is followed by application of 170 kg ha -1 and 150 kg NPK/ha -1 in decreasing manner. No application of NPK shows the lowest growth and yield response. Growth, Yield and Postharvest Quality of Wax Apple as Affected by Naphthalene Acetic Acid Application

-Results of this study represent the first report of the effect of Naphthalene Acetic Acid (NAA) on the pre and post harvest quality of wax apple fruit. The wax apple trees were spray treated with 0, 5, 10 and 20 mg L -1 NAA under field conditions during 2008 to 2011. The experiments were carried out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with six replications. Leaf chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence, photosynthetic yield, net photosynthetic rate, drymatter content of leaves and total soluble solids and K + content of wax apple fruits were significantly increased after treatments with 10 mg L -1 . Polygalacturonase activity significantly decreased with NAA treatments. The application of 5 mg L -1 NAA increased 27% more bud and reduced 42% less fruit drop compared to the control. In addition, higher protein and phosphate synthase activity of leaves, fruit set, fruit growth, larger fruit size and yield were recorded in NAA treated plants. In storage, treated fruits exhibited higher TSS and firmness and less weight loss, browning, titratable acidity, respiration and ethylene production than the control. It is concluded that spraying with 5 and 10 mg L -1 NAA once a week under field conditions produced better fruit growth and yield of the wax apple and maintained better fruit quality in postharvest storage.
