Evaluation of lipid profile and oxidative stress in STZ-induced rats treated with antioxidant vitamin

Abstract: The present study investigated the effect of supplementation of vitamin E on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats by measuring blood glucose, changes in body weight, food and water intake, lipid profile, serum urea and creatinine level, and antioxidant enzyme activity. “…In diabetes, reduced body weight is due to loss of proteins and lipid as a result of proteolysis and lipolysis (Hebert & Nair, 2010). The body weight in diabetic rats was significantly decreased compared to normal rat, as shown in previous study (Almeida et al, 2012).
