Peacock bass (Cichla spp.) originates from the Neotropical environments of Brazil and Venezuela but, through trade and smuggling for aquarium keeping, sport fishing and aquaculture, it is now an emerging concern. Yet, less is known for Cichla spp. distribution and its ability to invade new environments. Aimed to communicate on Cichla spp. ecology, biology and introduction schemes from Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar and also National Centre for Biotechnology Information, this review also contains management strategies for invading fish species. While Cichla spp. can displace native fish populations, this concern is explained using ecological functions, physiological demands, direct and secondary invasion, disease tolerance and parasite spillover. Briefly, Cichla spp. has rapid embryogenesis (72 h) and matures in short periods (11-12 months), giving it an advantage to colonize new environments. With a large appetite, this true piscivore gains territorial control over water bodies by making it their feeding and nursery grounds. Perceived as an emerging concern after becoming introduced, seal-off or sport fishing were used to manage Cichla spp. but, this practice is not sustainable for the entire ecosystem. Hence, we recommend bottom-up management that involves community participation because they interact with the fish and have knowledge about their environment.

“…O formato e a área expressaram efeito interativo sobre o tamanho dos peixes, sendo que o cultivo que continha comedouros no formato quadrado com área de 50% apresentou resultado superior àquele de formato quadrado com área de 100%. Resultados semelhantes foram observados por Neves et al (2008) estudando o desempenho produtivo das linhagens Bouaké e Chitralada, que ao final de um cultivo de 125 dias obtiveram um crescimento final entre 11,04 e 12,06 cm. Objetivou-se avaliar formatos e áreas de comedouros utilizados em tanques-rede sobre o desempenho, homogeneidade dos lotes e índices corporais de tilápia do Nilo. Foram utilizados 2.700 juvenis de tilápia com peso médio de 5,95 ± 1,23 g, distribuídos em 27 tanques-rede (0,5 x 0,5 x 1,0 m), em um delineamento experimental em esquema fatorial, com dois formatos de comedouros (quadrado e circular) e quatro áreas (100, 75, 50 ou 25%) e um tratamento controle (isento de comedouro), com três repetições. Após 64 dias avaliaram-se os parâmetros zootécnicos de ganho em peso, comprimento total, taxa de crescimento específico, sobrevivência, conversão alimentar aparente e homogeneidade dos lotes. Os índices viscerossomático, hepatossomático e gordura visceral também foram avaliados. O formato dos alimentadores não influenciou (p>0,05) os parâmetros de desempenho de juvenis de tilápia, no entanto, a ausência de comedouros afetou (p0,05) nos índices corporais, entretanto, os peixes submetidos aos tanques-rede sem comedouros apresentaram menores (p

This study aimed to compare the morphological traits and growth performance of monosex populations of the Genetic Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT) and Saint Peter ® of male tilapias reared in a mixed system. The experiment was carried out from June 2012 to November 2012 in Sgarbi fish farm, Palotina, Paraná State, Brazil. GIFT juveniles were obtained from the State University of Maringá (UEM/Codapar) fish farm broodstock, and the red hybrids were from the Sgarbi fish farm broodstock. The average genetic values of GIFT from three genetic groups (I, II, and III) were obtained by controlling individual pedigree and genetic evaluation using Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP). Information from complete GIFT pedigree since its introduction in Brazil was used, and the genetic groups were ranked as I (upper group), II (middle group), and III (inferior group). In all, 1,880 fish, including 480 GIFT strain and 1,400 red hybrids, with an average initial weight of 15 g, were placed in a semi-intensive system with a density of 4.7 fish m -2 . The fish were individually identified using Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tags. Harvesting was performed at the end of a 160 d period. The performance data including final weight and daily weight gain, and morphological traits including total length, standard length, body depth, head length, tail depth, tail width, body width, head length/standard length, body area and body volume were evaluated. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey test at 5% probability level were applied. The average final weight and daily weight gain among the three genetic groups of GIFT did not show significant differences. However all GIFT groups (I, II, and III) presented average values of performance and morphological traits higher that the Saint Peter ® . Among the GIFT genetic groups, only body depth between groups I and III showed significant differences (p<0.001). The morphological traits and growth performance are superior in the GIFT strain, regardless of its genetic group, when compared to Saint Peter ® , except for the head length/standard length ratio.
