Impact of the Icaraí Sewage Outfall in Guanabara Bay, Brazil

Abstract: The present study aimed to evaluate the water quality of the Icaraí Sewage Outfall (ISEO) area. Sampling was conducted during winter and summer, and water samples were analyzed for dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, salinity, dissolved inorganic nutrients (DIN), seston, particulate organic matter (POM), and pigments. Results showed that the water chemistry of the area suffers temporal and spatial variation. Great variability was also seen in the C:N:P ratios of POM (August, 112:30:1; December, 59:11:1) and in … Show more

“…SIA in WWTP-impacted communities WWTP-upstream to downstream increases in nutrient loads were proved by increasing ammonium and POM concentrations. As ammonium is considered a useful tracer of WWTP discharge (Thomas and Carsola, 1980) and an indicator of the effluent (Marques Júnior et al, 2006), the spatial distribution of its concentration can indicate its point source of pollution. WWTP outfall loads have a significant effect on nitrogen signatures.…”

“…Low concentrations of dissolved oxygen, and great amounts of organic nutrients are characteristic of estuarine waters contaminated with domestic sewage (MAYER-PINTO & JUNQUEIRA 2003, MARQUES JUNIOR et al 2006, VIZZINI & MAZZOLA 2006. This contamination contributes to environmental stress.…”

“…Significant land-use change away from the natural estuarial ecosystems to heavy industrial and residential has led to widespread ecological degradation in water quality in the bay [3,4]. Unfiltered organic waste from sewage outfalls draining dense residential development has led to severe eutrophication and a significant decline in marine life [5,6]. High Chlorophyll-a levels tend to be observed at locations draining dense residential and industrial development, which correspond to Virtual Gage locations 1, 2, and 3 (Figure 8).…”
