Genetic variability of pre and post-fragmentation cohorts of Aspidosperma polyneuron Muell. Arg. (Apocynaceae)

Abstract: RAPD was used to access the genetic variability in Aspisdosperma polyneuron, a long-lived, late-reproducing tropical tree, and highly important for the Atlantic Forest. RAPD profiles from adults (pre-fragmentation, >300 years old) and seedlings (postfragmentation, <<50 years old) were analyzed. Results showed a decrease of genetic polymorphism of post-fragmentation cohorts in small fragments and higher genetic diversity within population. The genetic diversity distribution suggested the establishment of fragme… Show more

“…Total genetic diversity (H T ) was 0.387 and I were 0.460 and 0.549, for samples from the flat and the high declivity regions, respectively (Table 1). Torezan et al (2005) used random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers to assess genetic variation in samples A. polyneuron from six forest fragments, including five fragments that had been severely impacted by anthropic exploitation and one fragment within a conservation unit that is free of anthropogenic factors. The authors found fairly low values of H T = 0.278, even when only the conservation unit was considered (H S = 0.285 and I = 0.387), compared to those in this study (Table 1).…”

“…Arg (Apocynaceae) is a long-lived tropical tree species that can reach over 1200 years (Carvalho, 1994). The trees have a slow growth rate, taking 10 to 15 years to increase 5 cm in diameter at breast height and around 50 years to reach the reproductive stage (Torezan et al, 2005). This species grows to 20-30 m in height and its trunk can reach 60 to 90 cm in diameter.…”

“…Na literatura, a maioria das pesquisas é baseada na caracterização florística e estrutural em fragmentos de ocorrência natural das espécies. Alguns avanços nos estudos de diversidade genética com marcadores moleculares foram contemplados com Torezan et al (2005), Damasceno et al (2011), Zimback et al (2011. Entretanto, trabalhos sobre desenvolvimento e variação genética para os caracteres de crescimento são escassos, sendo o mais recente publicado em 2008 (Sato et al, 2008).…”
