Effects of an experimental challenge with Mycobacterium marinum on the blood parameters of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1757)

Abstract: A hundred adult of tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, were inoculated intraperitoneally with 10 8 c.f.u. of Mycobacterium marinum. Other 100 speciemns were maintained without inoculation. Blood samples of six inoculated animals were collected at 01, 03, 07, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56

“…The clinical signs of diseases clearly suggested the possible presence of mycobacterium infection according to Wolf and Smith (1999), Ranzani-Paiva, et al (2004), Gauthier andRhodes (2009), andShukla, et al(2013). In general, the presence of granulomas and acid-fast rods (Fig 1a,b) in the infected fishes showed the same structure as those described in others species with mycobacterial infections (Heckert, et al, 2001;dos Santos, et al, 2002;Shukla, et al, 2013).…”

“…Traditionally, the presences of external signs of diseases associated to presence of acid-fast bacilli in histological samples are used for compatible diagnosis of mycobacteriosis in fish, where bacteriology culture is not always successful performed (Ranzani-Paiva, et al, 2004).. “…Plasma glucose was measured by the enzymatic glucose-HK procedure (Sigma). We also calculated number of white blood cells (WBCs), and number of red blood cells (RBCs) according to Ranzani-Paiva et al (2004). The rest of the fish were freeze-dried as whole body and held at −80°C until used for proximate composition analysis.…”

“…Blood was spread on the slides and Giemsa stained blood smears were conducted for differential count of WBC (neutrophils and monocytes) (Hrubec et al 2001). The rest of haematological indices, including mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentrations (MCHC) were analysed by standard formulas (Ranzani-Paiva et al 2004). …”
