Liming and root development, nutrition and production of 'Valência' orange on rootstocks and soil tillage systemsAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of liming and of rootstocks on root amount, and on the nutrition and yield of 'Valência' orange, in different soil tillage systems. The experiment was set up in a randomized block design with split-split-plot arrangement and three replicates. The plots consisted of two soil tillage systems: conventional tillage or minimum tillage. The sub-plots consisted of two liming levels: with or without liming. The sub-sub-plots consisted of three rootstocks: 'Rangpur' lime (Citrus limonia), 'Cleopatra' mandarin (Citrus reshni) and Poncirus trifoliata. The liming-treatment received 3 Mg ha -1 of dolomite limestone before the implantation, and 1.65 Mg ha -1 four years after planting. Fruit production was evaluated during 12 years; Ca and Mg leaf contents were evaluated 13 years after the experiment implantation; and roots and soil chemical attributes, 14 years after the implantation. Soil tillage systems and their interaction with the other factors did not influence the evaluated variables. 'Rangpur' lime showed the highest adaptation to soil acidity, Al and to the lower contents of Ca and Mg, with no response to liming. Poncirus trifoliate showed the lowest adaptation to soil acidity, and lime increased its root amount in 126% and its fruit production in 26.4%.

Fruit yield and quality of citrus trees (Citrus spp.) is markedly affected by potassium (K) fertilization. Potassium chloride is the major source of K, even though other sources are also available for agricultural use when crops are sensitive to chloride or where potential for accumulation of salts in soils exists. Only few studies addressed the effect of K sources on yield and quality of citrus fruits. Therefore, the present study was conducted to evaluate K 2 SO 4 and KCl fertilizer sources at 0, 100, 200, and 300 kg ha -1 per year K 2 O on fruit yield and quality of 'Pêra' and 'Valencia' sweet orange trees in the field. The experiments were carried out in a 4 × 2 factorial design under randomized complete blocks, with four replicates from 2001 to 2004. Fruit yield increased with increased K fertilization. Nutrient rate for maximum economic yield of 'Pêra' was 200 kg ha -1 of K 2 O and for 'Valencia', 270 kg ha -1 of K 2 O. Differences were attributed to higher production and K exportation by fruits of 'Valencia'. Fruit mass also increased with increased K fertilization what decreased total soluble solids in juice, and which correlated with leaf K concentrations for 'Valencia' (r = 0.76; p < 0.05). Leaf Ca, Mg and B concentrations decreased with K rates. Additionally, leaf Cl increased up to 440 mg kg -1 with KCl rates, even though no negative effects occurred either on fruit yield or quality of trees.

Palavras-chave: calagem, massa seca, área foliar, LamiaceaeABSTRACT: Action of potentials of hydrogen on growth and productivity of sage (Salvia officinalis L.). The soil potential of hydrogen (pH) is a parameter that indicates the acidity or alkalinity level. Plants are known to react differently to changes in the soil pH. Few studies have related growth and productivity of medicinal plants to the soil pH variation. The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of different potentials of hydrogen in Oxisol on sage growth and producti vity. With the aid of a soil acidity neutralization curve, different CaCO 3 levels were applied to reach pH values of 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0 and 6.5. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse during 18 months, covering sowing, transplanting and three-pruning phases. Plant height, leaf, root and shoot dry matter (sum of leaf, branch and stem dry matter), leaf area and root volume were evaluated. Sage growth and productivity were directly affected by the soil pH variation. The maintenance of pH > 5.0 was enough to significantly increase leaf area, and leaf and shoot dry matter of sage plants at 52.2%, 60.5% and 42.4%, respectively, and did not affect root development of sage plants grown in soils presenting different pH levels.
