The potential of a recently established marine protected area (MPA) in the Western Atlantic, Brazil, as a 'seed production' and nursery ground for Xiphopenaeus kroyeri, an intensively exploited penaeid shrimp, was investigated in an attempt to reveal any future benefit of this new MPA to adjacent populations experiencing heavy exploitation. Overall, we observed that males and females >12 and 20 mm carapace length, respectively, contributed the most to reproduction in the studied population. Reproductive activity of X. kroyeri was continuous at the MPA; 2 annual reproductive peaks were recorded from March to April and from November to December, which were followed by recruitment events occurring from March to April 2009 and November 2009. Sediment, temperature, and algae and plant biomass floating near the bottom were relevant in driving reproductive activity and recruitment in X. kroyeri. The high reproductive potential of the studied population and the occurrence of abundant juveniles throughout the sampling area, indicating the existence of a nursery ground within the region, suggest that this MPA might provide important benefits in the near future. We argue in favor of future long-term studies on the larval dispersion, reproductive biology and ecology of X. kroyeri in MPAs and non-MPAs to construct a base for future management of this species and to aid stock recovery in fishing areas that are heavily exploited. From 1960 to 2009, 513 785 t (~51%) of the total global catch (1 013 993 t) was extracted from the Brazilian coast (FAO 2011).In the northern, northeastern, southeastern and southern regions of the Brazilian coast, which were described by Matsuura (1995) as the major fishing grounds, the seabob shrimp is heavily exploited by trawl fishing boats (Vasconcellos et al. 2007(Vasconcellos et al. , 2011. Vasconcellos et al. (2007) collected information about the status of stocks of Xiphopenaeus kroyeri based on the analysis of time-series landings by artisan fisheries during the period 1980 to 2002. Estuaries are coastal water bodies with great economic and biological importance. The benthic organisms play a significant role in these environments as regulators or modifiers of physical, chemical and biological processes. This study aimed to evaluate the spatial and temporal distribution of the infralittoral decapods in the Itajaí-Açu estuary, investigating factors that influence their distribution and possible effects of a flood event on the benthic community. Six sampling points were established along the longitudinal gradient of the estuary. Monthly samples were taken with otter trawls between May 2008 and July 2010. The abundance and biomass of the crustaceans were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Variations in the physicochemical data of the water column, and its possible effects over the decapods, were also evaluated. The results showed that pH, salinity and dissolved oxygen are related to the penetration of the salt wedge, while temperature shows a seasonal pattern. The estuary showed a low richness (14 species), mainly in the two months after the flood of November 2008, and high dominance. It was possible to infer that many factors act on the estuary making it difficult to establish clear relationships between the biota and environmental variables in particular. There was an increase in abundance and biomass between February and July 2009, which suggests that the fauna was able to recover from the flood.

Xiphopenaeus kroyeri (Heller, 1862) is the third most common species caught by fi shing boats in the state of São Paulo, Brazil and production of this shrimp in the Cananéia region located on the southern coast of this state ranks second in the nation. Th e aim of this study was to investigate the temporal variation of the total biomass and size of X. kroyeri and analyze this variation against environmental factors in order to suggest some information about the best periods to fi sh this species. Samples were caught monthly from four sampling stations in Cananéia between July 2012 and June 2014 using a fi shing boat equipped with ott er-trawl nets. Temperature and salinity were monitored using a multiparameter probe, and sediment samples were also taken using a Van Veen-type gripper for particle size analysis. Th e shrimp were weighed, quantifi ed, and carapace length was measured (mm). In general, the highest total biomass values were recorded when the fi shery was closed in the southeast and south regions, and the highest catch of smaller individuals was also observed during this period. In contrast, in November 2013 the fi shing is permitt ed and high biomass composed of large individuals was observed.
