A B S T R A C TFollowing the recent expansion of the Brazilian fishery to slope fishing grounds, a new directed trawl fishery for aristeid shrimps emerged since mid 2002. Aristaeopsis edwardsiana has been the main component of the catches attaining 88.4% of total shrimp production. Aristaeomorpha foliacea and Aristeus antillensis have composed significantly smaller fractions of the landings (9.8 % and 1.8 % respectively).
Pinnotherid crabs are typically found associated with many benthic invertebrates. O n sandy beaches of southern Brazil, Pinni.\-apa/u~orziensis RATHBUN, 1918 inhabits burrows of the ghost shrimp Seryio niirirtt (RODRIGUES, 1971). The population dynamics of this crab were studied from monthly samples taken between March 1989 and November 1991 near the Patos Lagoon outlet, southern Brazil (ca. 32"13'S; 52"15'W). There was no correlation between the number and size of the crabs and the size of their respective hosts. Mean densities and incidence reached 3.1 indiv:opening-' (range: 0 to 29) and 83.9%. respectively. Sex-ratios were not significantly different from 1 : 1 for the different size classes and sampling dates. Ovigerous females were found between October and March, showing an average fecundity of 1529 eggs per female. The annual recruitment pattern was bimodal, with a ininor peak in summer and a fall peak that accounted for almost 70% of the population maintenance. Males and females both reached a maximum carapace width of 11.5 mm and had a life span of nearly two years as estimated from fitted VON BERTALANFFY growth curve parameters.
ABSTRACT. The development of a deep-sea fishery for aristeid shrimps off Brazil is reviewed from its early days in 2002. Descriptive data were collected by observers on board 75 directed fishing trips conducted in the study period, with a total of over 15,000 monitored trawls. An incipient fishing phase took place between November 2000 and October 2002, when aristeid shrimps were occasionally reported in the bycatch of operations mostly targeting the Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi). After that, a directed fishery was established for these resources. All nine vessels involved in this fishery (one national and eight chartered) concentrated on 11 limited grounds between 700 and 800 m deep and 18ºS and 34ºS. The main species caught between November 2002 and May 2007 was the "carabinero" Aristaeopsis edwardsiana (456,710 kg), followed by the "moruno" Aristaeomorpha foliacea (121,497 kg), and then the "alistado" Aristeus antillensis (27,919 kg). The trawlers operate in conjunction, such that the total area of each fishing ground was swept at least twice. This harvest pattern substantially reduced "carabinero" catch rates from 14 kg hour -1 in the first sampled trimester to 4 kg hour -1 in the last. Despite the inferred biomass reduction of this species, the fishery has continued without a formal management plan.
