Introduction: Hemoglobin S (HbS) is unstable hemoglobin that easily oxidizes, causing methemoglobin (MetHb) increased production in patients with sickle-cell anemia (SCA). Objectives: To determine MetHb levels and the influence of hydroxyurea (HU) therapy on this marker in patients with SCA. Materials and methods: Blood samples from 53 patients with SCA at the steady-state, with and without HU therapy, and 30 healthy individuals were collected to evaluate MetHb levels. The MetHb measurement was performed by spectrophotometry. Complete blood count, HU measurements, and fetal hemoglobin (HbF) and HbS concentrations were taken from medical records. Results: MetHb levels were statically higher in patients with SCA when compared to control group (p < 0.001). There was no statistical difference in MetHb level between SCA patients, either using or not HU. We obtained a positive correlation between MetHb measurements and HbS concentration (r = 0.2557; p = 0.0323). Conclusion: HbS presence favored hemoglobin breaking down, and consequently increased MetHb production. Treatment with HU, however, did not influence the levels of this marker.

RESUMO:Este artigo descreve a ocorrência, características botânicas, fitoquímicas e a composição nutricional do feijão guandu [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp], e sua relação no processo de inibição da falcização na doença falciforme, um distúrbio genético que acomete as hemácias, gerando hemólise e anemia crônica. Dois constituintes químicos estariam mais relacionados aos efeitos inibitórios na falcização de células falciformes: L-fenilalanina e o ácido p-hidroxibenzóico. Estudos químico-biológicos detalhados com o feijão guandu no Brasil poderão esclarecer melhor os mecanismos pelos quais ocorre a inibição da falcização das hemácias e a diminuição do estresse oxidativo, ajudando no tratamento de pessoas com DF.Palavras-chave: propriedades medicinais, cajanus cajan, anemia falciforme. ABSTRACT: Review of Medicinal Cajanus cajan of properties in Sickle Cell Disease.This article describes the occurrence, botanical characteristics, phytochemical and nutritional composition of pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp], and their relationship in the process inhibition of sickling in sickle cell disease (SCD), a genetic disorder that affects red blood cells, causing hemolysis and chronic anemia. Two chemical components would be related to the inhibitory effect on sickling of sickle cells: the L-phenylalanine and the p-hydroxybenzoic acid. In Brazil, detailed studies with pigeonpea chemical-biological may clarify the mechanisms by which the inhibition of sickling of red blood cells occurs, reducing oxidative stress and thus helping treating people affected by this disease.

ResumoEsse estudo, descritivo com abordagem qualitativa, tem por finalidade compreender as manifestações de discriminação racial e de classe que ocorrem com pessoas que vivenciam a doença falciforme. Participaram do estudo 33 pessoas. O corpus de análise foi composto do registro das narrativas e observações de campo contidas no Diário de Pesquisa. Os resultados mostraram que o preconceito na área da saúde, muitas vezes, se manifesta por meio do racismo institucional. No âmbito socioeconômico, as pessoas que vivenciam o agravo muitas vezes têm poder aquisitivo menor, em parte devido ao próprio racismo, e também devido às limitações que o adoecimento impõe. Evidenciamos que a qualidade de atendimento e infraestrutura dos serviços de saúde está diretamente relacionada à cor e classe social dos usuários. Com este estudo foi possível compreender mais profundamente esse fenômeno social em saúde, permitindo a elaboração de medidas para solucionar esse quadro de violação de direitos humanos. Assim, sugere-se a realização de outros estudos com foco nas implicações sociais da doença falciforme, para aprimorar a qualidade dos serviços de saúde prestados a essa população. Palavras-chave:
