Meat and carcass traits of the red-winged tinamou (Rhynchotus rufescens)

Abstract: Tinamou (Rhynchotus rufescens) is a native bird of the Brazilian fauna and has great potential to become a domesticated species. From this perspective, the objective of this study was to evaluate the carcass and main parts yield and to assess meat quality of that bird. Two trials, one studying stocking density and the other litter materials, lasting 60 days each, were conducted. The studied traits were evaluated in two birds/ replicate/treatment. Performance was evaluated by the least square method. The result… Show more

“…The average breast yield obtained in the present experiment was 31.79 (± 0.29) %; which is lower than those reported by Queiroz et al (2013) and Moro et al (2006), of 33.72% e 36.6%, respectively. The effect of age on breast yield is an indication that the growth of the breast muscles is associated with secondary sexual differentiation of flightless birds.…”

“…Moro et al (2006) reported a lower value, of 74.4%, in redwinged tinamous (Rhynchotus rufescens) submitted to different feeding programs, whereas Queiroz et al (2013), evaluating rearing density, obtained 85.48% average carcass yield in this same species.…”

“…Despite being wild, their domestication has attracted great interest due to their high cynegetic value, and excellent carcass yield, particularly breast yield (Queiroz et al, 2013), as well as remarkable adaptation to commercial feeds (Hoshiba et al, 2003). Therefore, aiming at supplying a consumer market for exotic meats, this species could be reared under similar commercial conditions as broilers.…”
