Palavras-chave: alterações morfológicas, nitrogênio, sombreamento artificial Grass Forages Production Cultivated under Light ReductionABSTRACT -The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of three levels of artificial shade (0, 30 and 60%) on dry matter production, nitrogen content and morphological characteristics of six forage grasses (Andropogon gayanus cv. Planaltina, Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu, B. decumbens, Melinis minutiflora, Panicum maximum cv. Vencedor and Setaria anceps cv. Kazungula). A randomized block design, with split plots and four replicates, was used; the shading levels were allotted to the plots and the species to the split plots. The results showed that shading affected the production of dry matter, the nitrogen content and the morphological characteristics of the evaluated species. The production of forage was differentially affected by the shade. The dry matter production of P. maximum cv. Vencedor was 19.72% higher, at moderate shade than in broad daylight. The forage production of S. anceps cv. Kazungula, however, was not affected by the shade. The dry matter production of other species decreased with the reduction of the light. In all species there was an increase of N content and reduction of the content of dry matter of the forage, which became juicier in the shade. The morphological characteristics did not show a standard behavior, which varied according to the studied specie.
Productive and qualitative traits of Brachiaria decumbens pasture in monoculture and associated with Stylosanthes guianensisAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the forage mass and botanical composition of Brachiaria decumbens Stapf pasture in monoculture and associated with Stylosanthes guianensis (Aubl.) Sw. var. vulgaris cv. Mineirão in various months along the year. The samples from January and May were rumen incubated. Three paddocks (replications) were divided in two plots (monoculture and associated pastures). After the evaluations forage was grazed by dried cows. The forage mass of B. decumbens did not vary with the pasture system; in October it was lower (291 kg/ha) and maintained stable along the other months (1,571 kg/ha). A decrease tendency of legume forage mass was observed during the experimental period. The proportion of S. guianensis in the pasture was higher in October/ 2001 and lower in January/2002. The total forage mass of associated pasture (2,158 kg/ha) was higher than the monoculture pasture (1,481 kg/ha). The degradation rates and effective degradability of S. guianensis and B. decumbens were respectively 6.8%/h and 61.5% and 5.3%/h and 49.2%. The legume contribute for higher quantity and better quality forage available in associated pasture.
Aluminum toxicity is an important limitation to legume growth on many acid soils. Stylosanthes species are often grown on such soils, but effects of A1 on their growth are poorly understood. Effects of four solution Al concentrations (0, 25, 75, and 125 µM) on the growth of six Stylosanthes species was examined on plants supplied with 500 µM NH4NO3 and on plants inoculated with Rhizobium CB 756. Aluminum toxicity depressed growth more severely in those plants dependent on symbiotic N2 fixation than in those supplied with combined N. At 25 µM Al, S. hamata (L.) Taub. and S. fruticosa (Retz) Alston exhibited high tolerance when dependent on symbiotic N2 fixation, while the other four species were less tolerant. Yield of all six species was strongly depressed at 125MµM Al, irrespective of the N source. The greater sensitivity of the inoculated plants to Al toxicity was associated with a strong reduction in nodulation f all species. Aluminum delayed nodulation in all species except S. hamata, reduced the number of plants which nodulated in S. guianensis (Aubl.) Sw., S. scabra Vog., and S. viscosa Swartz, and reduced the number and dry weight of nodules in all six species. Greater effects of Al on nodule weight than on root weight were observed particularly in the more poorly nodulated species S. guianensis, S. scabra, and S. viscosa. Tolerance to Al by the various species thus appears to be dependent on their ability to nodulate and develop an effective symbiosis in the presence of Al, and on the inherent sensitivity of the host plant to Al.
