Salmonella Gallinarum virulence in experimentally-infected Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica)

Abstract: Salmonella Gallinarum is the agent of fowl typhoid in poultry and infects mainly adult galliforms, causing significant economic losses in poultry production. Because quails are susceptible to this disease and quail production is becoming increasingly important in Brazil, this study was carried out to evaluate the virulence of Salmonella Gallinarum strain to quails. The inoculum was prepared from S. Gallinarum strain resistant to nalidixic acid. Forty eight 16-week-old Japanese quails were randomly distributed … Show more

“…Forty eight day-old cockerels were randomly assigned to eight groups (A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H) of six (6) each. The chicks were screened by the method of Roch-Silva et al [17] to ensure they were free of Salmonella species. Each chick was infected with 1.2 × 10 5 CFU of a Cotrimoxazole-resistant Salmonella pullorum isolate.…”

“…This strain was donated by the Department of Veterinary Pathology of UNESP, Jaboticabal, Brazil. The inoculum was prepared according to Rocha e Silva et al (2013) and three distinct concentrations of the inoculum (6x10 4 CFU/0.1mL, 2x10 5 CFU/0.4mL e 5x10 6 CFU/0.2mL of Salmonella Gallinarum Nal r /mL) were obtained.…”

“…Dead birds were submitted to necropsy for gross evaluation and their organs (liver, spleen, lung, cecum, and reproductive Recovery of Salmonella Gallinarum in the Organs of Experimentally-Inoculated Japanese Quails (Coturnix coturnix) tract) were collected for microbiological analyses according to Rocha e Silva et al(2013).…”
