To restore efficacy (≥95% infection-reduction) to drugs against resistant infections (now, posing a bigger medical challenge, globally, than even HIV/AIDS), Cotrimoxazole was formulated with a synthetic Aluminum-magnesium silicate (Medicinal mineral which molecules are made of Nanoparticles, that is already in use as pharmaceutical-stabilizing agent) and used with antioxidants to treat Cotrimoxazole-resistant Salmonella pulorum infected chicks. Chick-groups A, B and C were fed antioxidants-fortified feed while groups D, E, F, G and H were not. The treatment-groups and their Cotrimoxazole doses/formulations were: A and D (100%/MSAMS-Cotrimoxazole); B and E (75%/MSAMS-Cotrimoxazole); C and F (50%/MSAMS-Cotrimoxazole) and G (100%/Cotrimoxazole). Infection-reductions (96.23% and 94.98%) of the groups of 75%/MSAMS-Cotrimoxazole/antioxidants and 75%/MSAMS-Cotrimoxazole were significantly (P ≤ 0.05) better than 76.99% (100%/Cotrimoxazole); 10.04% (50%/MSAMS-Cotrimoxazole/antioxidants); 1.60% (50%/MSAMS-Cotrimoxazole); −212.60% (100%/MSAMS-Cotrimoxazole/antioxidants) and −230.96% (100%/MSAMS-Cotrimoxazole).

Salmonellosis is an infection caused by specific or non specific serotypes of the Salmonella genus, responsible for losses in the poultry industry. Fowl typhoid, caused by S. Gallinarum (SG) is important because it causes elevated mortality in adult birds, leading to economic losses in the poultry industry. This study aimed at quantifying the number of viable SG cells in the liver, spleen, lung, cecum, and reproductive tract (ovary and testicles) of experimentally inoculated Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix), as well as SG shedding in their feces. One hundred and two Japanese quails, with four months of age at the beginning of the experiment, were used. The birds were inoculated with three bacterial cultures containing different concentrations (6x10 4 CFU/0.1mL, 2x105 CFU/0.4mL, or 5x10 6 CFU/0.2mL) of SG resistant to nalidixic acid. On days 1, 4, 7, and 14 after the inoculation (dpi) individual cloacal swabs were collected from six birds per group, which were subsequently sacrificed for organ sampling. The swab samples were streaked directly on plates containing brilliant green agar and nalidixic acid (VBNal). Samples that were negative after 24h, were streaked again. The collected organs were individually macerated and transferred to buffered peptone water at 0.1%. The solutions were immediately diluted serially for CFU counting in VBNal. SG was successfully recovered from one quail, which was inoculated with 2x10 5 CFU/0.4mL, and from five quails of the group inoculated with 5x10 6 CFU/0.2mL inoculum. All of the analyzed cloacal swab samples were negative. Therefore, this study demonstrated it was difficult to isolate SG from the analyzed organs and that it was not possible to recover thepathogen in the cloacal swabs collected from inoculated quails. These results may be explained by the absence of flagella in SG, inducing weak intestinal immune response in the beginning of the infection and preventing its isolation in cloacal swab samples. The low positivity rate of the analyzed organs may be due to the immune status of the euthanized birds, since the SG dissemination in the animal organism occurs mostly close to death, which was observed in the birds found dead during the experiment.

Salmonellosis is one of the most common causes of foodborne bacterial human disease worldwide, and the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. typhimurium) was associated to the incidence of invasive salmonellosis. The objective of the present work was to investigate the effects of the TiO photocatalysis process in terms of both bacteria inactivation and the emergence of mutants, on S. typhimurium TA102 water suspensions. The TiO photocatalysis was compared with a conventional disinfection process such as UV-C radiation. In spite of the faster bacterial inactivation obtained in UV-C disinfection experiments (45, 15, and 10 min for total inactivation for initial cell density 10, 10, and 10 CFU mL, respectively), photocatalytic disinfection (60, 30, and 15 min) was more energy efficient because of a lower energy requirement (2-20 mWs cm) compared to the UV-C disinfection process (5-30 mWs cm). During the photocatalytic experiments, the mutation frequency increased up to 1648-fold compared to background level for a 10 CFU mL initial bacterial density, and mutants were inactivated after 1-10-min treatment, depending on initial bacterial cell density. In UV-C disinfection experiments, the mutation frequency increased up to 2181-fold for a 10 CFU mL initial bacterial cell density, and UV-C doses in the range of 0.5-4.8 mWs cm were necessary to decrease mutation frequency. In conclusion, both disinfection processes were effective in the inactivation of S. typhimurium cells, and mutants released into the environment can be avoided if cells are effectively inactivated.
