Evaluation of a radiographic method to detect tibial dyschondroplasia lesions in broilers

Abstract: This study aimed at developing radiographic techniques for the early detection of dyschondroplastic lesions in the tibia of broilers. The experiment was carried out at the facilities of UNIFOR/MG and Formiga and UNIFENAS/ Alfenas with 420 one-day-old male Cobb broilers. At 20 days of age, all birds were radiographed and identified with an alpha-numeric metal ring in the right leg. At 40 days of age, 42 broilers previously selected as a function of bone mineral density and lesion thickness scores were again rad… Show more

“…This prevalent skeletal abnormality is a leading cause of lameness in poultry raised for meat purposes with consequent large economic losses (Dan et al, 2009;Pelicia et al, 2012). The method of TD induction for experimental purposes has already been well established (Orth & Cook, 1994;Rath et al, 2005;Simsa et al, 2007) and a variety of protocols have been employed to induce TD, including manipulation of nutritional factors (Rennie et al, 1993), cysteine supplement (Bai & Cook, 1994) and thiram, a copper chelator compound (Rath et al, 2004;Gay et al, 2007;Tian et al, 2009).…”

“…Tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) is one of the most prevalent leg disorders in chickens and accounts for approximately 30% of such cases in broiler flocks (Pelicia et al, 2012). TD is characterized by the presence of a dull white avascular, non-mineralized cartilage mass that extends into the metaphysis of the proximal tibiotarsus (Leach & Nesheim, 1965).…”

“…This dull white avascular and noncalcified lesion, which ultimately leads to overt locomotion problems, has accounted 30% economic loss to the broiler flocks (9). TD was attributed to abnormal differentiation of chondrocytes (10) and changes in gene expressions have been reported previously in lesioned growth plate cartilage (11).…”

“…Tibial Dyschondroplasia (TD) is a kind of longbonedisorder in which growth plate cartilage failed to form bone due to poor vascularization and calcification and cause lameness (Leach and Ornan, 2007). It is one of the most prevailing leg disorders and accounts about 30% of such cases in broiler birds (Pelicia et al, 2012). Avian growth plate normally contains longer columns of chondrocytes with deeper penetration of metaphyseal blood vessels making more vascular growth plate (Pines and Huwirtz, 1991;Pines et al, 2005).…”
