Drinking water as a risk factor to poultry health

Abstract: In the poultry industry, the use of water with adequate physical, chemical and microbiological quality it is of fundamental importance. Since many birds have access to the same water source, quality problems will affect a great number of animals. The drinking water plays an important role in the transmission of some bacterial, viral and protozoan diseases that are among the most common poultry diseases. Important factors to prevent waterborne diseases in broiler production are the protection of supply sources,… Show more

“…This contamination may be due to the use of bell drinkers. Studying the water quality in different types of drinkers, Barros et al (2001) and Valias & Silva (2001) found that bell drinkers may reduce the biological quality of the water provided to broilers, posing a high risk of contamination (Amaral, 2004).…”

Studying the water quality in different types of drinkers, Barros et al (2001) and Valias & Silva (2001) found that bell drinkers may reduce the biological quality of the water provided to broilers, posing a high risk of contamination (Amaral, 2004).As the hygienic status of drinking water varies greatly among farms, methods and strategies to identify critical contamination points need to be identified and updated, and measured to control water-borne diseases at farm level need to be applied. …”

“…Water is considered a substantial source of various infections on poultry farms (Amaral, 2004;Saidy et al, 2015). Seventy five percent of the farms (n = 30) in this study used treated, reticulated water as the only source of drinking water for chickens, 7.5% of farms (n = 3) used water wells as the only source of drinking water, while 17.5% of farms (n = 7) used a combination of town and dam water.…”

“…The ability of bacteria to survive in water makes drinking water used on broiler farms a potential source of infections (Amaral, 2004). Droppings and secretions of wild birds and other animals could contaminate water sources on poultry farms.…”
