Background: In medial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE), previous studies addressing the hemispheric laterality of epileptogenic focus and its relationship with learning and memory processes have reported controversial findings. Objective: To compare the performance of MTLE patients according to the location of the epileptogenic focus on the left (MTLEL) or right temporal lobe (MTLER) on tasks of episodic learning and memory for verbal and visual content. Methods: One hundred patients with MTLEL and one hundred patients with MTLER were tested with the following tasks: the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) and the Logical Memory-WMS-R to evaluate verbal learning and memory; and the Rey Visual Design Learning Test (RVDLT) and the Visual Reproduction-WMS-R to evaluate visual learning and memory. Results: The MTLEL sample showed significantly worse performance on the RAVLT (p < 0.005) and on the Logical Memory tests (p < 0.01) than MTLER subjects. However, there were no significant between-group differences in regard to the visual memory tests. Discussion: Our findings suggest that verbal learning and memory abilities are dependent on the structural and functional integrity of the left temporal lobe, while visual abilities are less dependent on the right temporal lobe.

The Link between Estradiol and Neuroplasticity in Transgender Women after Gender-Affirming Surgery: A Bimodal Hypothesis

For transgender individuals, gender-affirming surgery (GAS) and cross-sex hormone therapy (CSHT) are part of the gender transition process. Scientific evidence supporting the maintenance of CSHT after GAS-related gonadectomy is accumulating. However, few data are available on the impact of CSHT on the brain structure following hypogonadism. Thus, we aimed to investigate links between estradiol and brain cortical thickness (CTh) and cognition in 18 post-gonadectomy transgender women using a longitudinal de-sign. For this purpose, the participants underwent a voluntary period of CSHT washout of at least 30 days, followed by estradiol re-institution for 60 days. High-resolution T1weighted brain images, hormonal measures, working and verbal memory were collected at 2 time points: on the last day of the washout (t1) and on the last day of the 2-month CSHT period (t2). Between these 2 time points, CTh increased within the left precentral gyrus and right precuneus but decreased within the right lateral occipital cortex. However, these findings did not survive corrections of multiple comparisons. Nevertheless, there was a significant negative correlation between changes in estradiol levels and changes in CTh. This effect was evident in the left superior frontal gyrus, the left middle temporal gyrus, the right precuneus, the right superior temporal gyrus, and the right pars opercularis. Al-Schneider et al.though there was an improvement in verbal memory following hypogonadism correction, we did not observe a significant relationship between changes in memory scores and CTh. Altogether, these findings suggest that there is a link between estradiol and CTh.

Personality factors in the elderly: The relationship between cognitive functioning and depressive symptoms

Personality factors have been highlighted as possible predictors for cognitive performance and depressive symptomatology in the elderly. The current study aims to investigate the relationship between the five principal personality factors, depressive symptomatology and cognitive performance of elderly during attention, memory and executive function tasks. Additionally, there was the attempt to investigate the predictor role played by depression symptoms and cognitive functioning in personality factors. The convenience sampling method was used and 72 elderly persons, aged between 60 and 85 years, were evaluated. They answered questions about sociodemographic conditions, personality factors (NEO-FFI-R), depressive symptomatology (GDS-15) and underwent an evaluation of their cognitive functions. Results showed a positive to moderate relationship between Neuroticism and depressive symptomatology, as well as a negative to moderate relationship between Openness to experience and depressive symptomatology. Depressive symptoms emerge as the strongest predictor correlated to the highest Neuroticism indices and the lowest of Extroversion, Openness to experience, and Conscientiousness. Non-perseverative errors on the WCST were strongly associated, with the higher scores on Neuroticism and lower in Extraversion in the sample. The investigation points towards the existence of a relationship among personality, depressive symptomatology, and cognitive functioning factors in the elderly, however, further studies are suggested. RESUMO -Fatores de personalidade em idosos: relação com funcionamento cognitivo e sintomas depressivosOs fatores de personalidade têm sido apontados como possíveis preditores do desempenho cognitivo e sintomatologia depressiva na velhice. O presente estudo teve como objetivo investigar a relação entre os cinco grandes fatores de personalidade, sintomatologia depressiva e o desempenho cognitivo em tarefas de atenção, memória e funções executivas. Foi utilizado o método amostra de conveniência; 72 idosos (60-85 anos), responderam questões sobre condições sociodemográficas, fatores de personalidade (NEO-FFI-R), sintomatologia depressiva (GDS-15) e avaliação das funções cognitivas. Os resultados mostraram uma relação positiva e moderada entre o fator Neuroticismo e sintomatologia depressiva; relação negativa e moderada entre o fator Abertura à Experiência e sintomatologia depressiva; sintomas depressivos apareceram correlacionados a índices mais altos de Neuroticismo e mais baixos de Extroversão, Abertura à experiência e Conscienciosidade; erros não perseverativos, no Teste Wisconsin de Classificação de Cartas (WCST) associaram-se aos escores mais altos em Neuroticismo e mais baixos em Extroversão.
