The purpose of the paper was to conduct a systematic review of early life stress and its association with psychiatric disorders in adulthood. The occurrence of early stress has lasting negative consequences on the individual, with psychopathology onset one of the most important consequences. The degree of early life stress is associated with the severity of psychiatric disorders and disability in adulthood. Methodology: We conducted a search of two databases (PubMed and SciELO), limited to the time span 1990-2010, using the following keywords: child abuse, maltreatment, early stress, and psychiatric disorders. Thirty-one papers were selected for this review. Results: We found that the subtypes of early life stress such as emotional and physical neglect and sexual, emotional, and physical abuse have associations with several psychiatric disorders, but the Borderline Personality Disorder and Mood Disorders are more associated with the categories listed. Conclusions: Exposure to adversities in childhood and adolescence is predictive of psychiatric disorders in adulthood. More studies are needed to understand the mechanisms by which early life stress is a risk factor for future psychopathology.

Trauma infantil e sua associação com transtornos do humor na vida adulta: uma revisão sistemática Eventos estressores traumáticos na infância ocorrem comumente em situações de maus-tratos e estão associados a prejuízos psicológicos e a transtornos mentais, entre eles os transtornos do humor. Este estudo apresenta uma revisão sistemática da literatura visando a identificar achados que descrevam associações entre trauma na infância e transtornos do humor na vida adulta. Uma busca de palavras-chave foi realizada nas bases de dados Scielo, Web of Science, PsychInfo, LILACS e Pubmed. Dez artigos preencheram os critérios de inclusão estabelecidos. Todos os artigos encontrados apontavam relações significativas entre traumas na infância e diferentes tipos de transtornos do humor. Estudos mostram ainda que, nos casos em que há esse tipo de associação, também são encontradas comorbidades psiquiátricas, pior sintomatologia e prognóstico. Palavras-chave:Transtornos do humor. Background: Maternal depression may be a risk factor for childhood trauma (CT), with resultant offspring development of mood disorders (MD) in adult life. Objective: To verify the relationship between maternal depression (as a risk factor for childhood trauma) and mood disorders in young adults. Methods: The sample was composed of 164 young adults and their mothers. Maternal depression was identified through the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.). Mood Disorders in the young adults were confirmed with the Structured Interview for the DSM-IV (SCID), whereas the CT was evaluated using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). Results: In the group of young adults with MD, individuals who had depressed mothers presented higher mean scores of CT in comparison to the ones who did not have mothers with Depression (p < 0.005). Childhood trauma was also associated with lower social classes (p < 0.005). In the group of young adults without MD, the only variable that was associated with CT was the young adult's (not) current work (p < 0.005). Discussion: Maternal depression was considered to be a risk factor for CT and MD in young adults. Thus, preventing and treating maternal psychiatric disorders may diminish the risk of offspring childhood trauma, and, consequently, avoid negative effects in the offspring's adult life.
