The objective of the present survey was to assess the Brazilian scientific production in psychiatry, psychobiology, and mental health during the 1998-2002 period. The universities' graduate programs concentrate the vast majority of the scientific production in Brazil. We assessed the annual reports from the graduate programs to the Brazilian Ministry of Education concerning master's and doctoral theses and the articles published in journals indexed by the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI). There are nine Master's and Doctoral graduate programs dedicated to research in psychiatry, neuropsychiatry, psychobiology, and mental health in the country, seven being located in southern states. During the 5-year period, from 1998 to 2002, 186 students received their doctorate degree (37/year). The programs published 637 articles in journals indexed by ISI, the majority of them in journals with an impact factor higher than 2. The research advisors' productivity varied among graduate programs, ranging from 0.6 to 2.0 articles per year in ISI-indexed journals. Despite the substantial barriers faced by the Brazilian scientific community (mainly financial and writing difficulties), Brazil's scientific mental health production is on the rise. The number of articles published in ISI-indexed journals has doubled without a significant increase in the number of graduate theses, suggesting that there was an improvement in both the quality of the scientific production and the productivity of the graduate programs. Based on these data, it is reasonable to predict a tendency to an increase in production over the next few years.

Esta pesquisa objetivou analisar a produção científica em avaliação psicológica no contexto escolar publicada em 234 artigos de sete periódicos científicos indexados. A análise baseou-se em alguns critérios da metaciência, a saber, autoria, temática, discurso e análise dos tipos de avaliações. Os resultados evidenciaram que em alguns periódicos há maior concentração de publicações sobre a temática, acentuada nos últimos anos. A participação feminina foi predominante na autoria dos artigos e detectou-se ampla diversificação nos propósitos e contextos nos quais os testes psicológicos têm sido usados. Quanto ao tipo de avaliação, os instrumentos psicométricos foram os mais utilizados, sendo freqüente, também, o emprego de entrevistas e observação. A técnica projetiva foi empregada em apenas 2,3% das investigações. Sugere-se que outros estudos similares sejam realizados, visando a monitorar a expansão da área de avaliação psicológica no Brasil.

Is there a ‘gender gap’ in authorship of the main Brazilian psychiatric journals at the beginning of the 21st century?

The aim of this study was to investigate the existence of a ''gender gap'' in the authorship of the four most important peer-reviewed psychiatric journals in Brazil and to quantify its magnitude. In addition, we examined the patterns of change in this gap during the period extending from 2001 to 2008 and variations according to the total number of authors, the type of article (original vs. non-original studies), and the journals themselves. A total of 1,036 articles were analyzed. We found that the proportion of female overall participation has increased from 2001 to 2008. Nevertheless, the incremental rate was accounted mostly by the growth of the participation in non-original articles. While the average annual increment for original articles was virtually null (.01%), for the nonoriginal articles the corresponding figure was 3.7%. We also found that the chance of a woman being first author was about three times greater in original papers as compared to non-original ones at the beginning of the study period; this differential declined by 11% per year during this period. A different pattern emerged from the analysis of female last authorship. Year of publication and type of study were still associated with the chance of a woman being the last author but without interaction. Further, the journals themselves were found to be related with female last authorship: the chance of a woman being the last author in an article published in the Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria was significantly smaller than in the other three journals. Our findings indicate clearly that some progress in being achieved in eliminating the gender gap also in field of Psychiatry and highlight the need for further research in this area.
