INTRODUÇÃOAcessando o site http://esi3.isiknowledge.com/rankdatapage.cgi, em 1º de fevereiro de 2006, obtivemos o JCR de 2006, em que constam 94 periódicos de psiquiatria com FI variando de 12,64 até 0,00 (2.43 ± 2,04). Para nosso estudo, selecionamos todos os periódicos com FI acima da média, totalizando 40 periódicos. Consideramos em nossa análise todos os tipos de artigo, exceto os comentários sobre livros e erratas. Entre estes artigos, avaliamos inicialmente aqueles em que pelo menos um autor tem afiliação a uma instituição brasileira.A seguir, analisamos os artigos em que pelo menos o primeiro autor e/ou o autor sênior têm afiliação à instituição brasileira, e artigos em que todos os autores apresentam afiliação à instituição brasileira, ou seja, artigos produzidos por uma equipe trabalhando exclusivamente no Brasil. Avaliamos, entre os artigos selecionados, a respectiva distribuição das publicações por estados, de acordo com a instituição de pesquisa na qual o pesquisador está afiliado. A análise estatística foi realizada com o programa SPSS v. 14 para Windows. MÉTODOS. Do total de 94 periódicos, selecionamos todos os artigos com FI acima da média (n = 40). Avaliamos, entre estes artigos, quantos apresentavam pelo menos um autor brasileiro, quantos eram compostos por equipe exclusivamente brasileira ou tinham pelo menos o primeiro autor e/ou o autor sênior filiado à instituição nacional. Avaliamos também a respectiva distribuição das publicações por estados, de acordo com a instituição de filiação do(s) autor(es). RESULTADOS. Entre 7.996 artigos avaliados, 96 (1,2%) tinham pelo menos um autor com afiliação em instituição brasileira e oito tinham autor sênior brasileiro, sendo excluídas as 59 publicações compostas exclusivamente por pesquisadores brasileiros. Ao se determinar a distribuição, por estados, da instituição de pesquisa na qual está(ão) vinculado(s) o(s) autor(res) brasileiro(s), São Paulo, com 46 publicações (47,91%), ficou na primeira posição, com predominância absoluta do eixo Sudeste-Sul (98,95%). CONCLUSÃO. Apesar das publicações brasileiras em psiquiatria terem apresentado aparente crescimento quantitativo e qualitativo, a produção científica da área é ainda pequena e altamente concentrada em alguns poucos estados. MÉTODOSUNITERMOS: Análise bibliométrica. Periódicos. Psiquiatria. Pesquisa. Fator de impacto. Artigo Original(1,2%) apresentavam pelo menos um autor afiliado a uma instituição brasileira. Artigos produzidos por equipe exclusivamente brasileira representaram 59 publicações, mais da metade dos artigos publicados com pelo menos um autor brasileiro (61,45%) (Tabela 1).Ao serem analisados os 96 artigos e determinada a distribuição por Estados da instituição de pesquisa a qual está(ão) vinculado(s) o(s) autor(res) brasileiro(s), observamos que o Estado de São Paulo, com 46 publicações (47,91%), ficou na primeira posição, seguido pelo Rio Grande do Sul, com 27 publicações (28,12%), e Rio de Janeiro, com dez (10,41%). OBJECTIVE: To assess the extent of mental health scientific production in Brazil from 1999 to 2003, and to identify the nature of the publications generated, their sources of finance and the ways of publicly disseminating the research findings. METHODS: Searches for publications were conducted in the Medline and PsychInfo databases for the period 1999-2003. A semi-structured questionnaire developed by an international team was applied to 626 mental health researchers, covering each interviewee's educational background, research experience, access to funding sources, public impact and research priorities. The sample was composed by 626 mental health researchers identified from 792 publications indexed on Medline and PsychInfo databases for the period above, and from a list of reviewers of Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria. RESULTS: In Brazil, 792 publications were produced by 525 authors between 1999 and 2003 (441 indexed in Medline and 398 in the ISI database). The main topics were: depression (29.1%), substance misuse (14.6%), psychoses (10%), childhood disorders (7%) and dementia (6.7%). Among the 626 Brazilian mental health researchers, 329 answered the questionnaire. CONCLUSIONS: There were steadily increasing numbers of Brazilian articles on mental health published in foreign journals from 1999 to 2003: the number of articles in Medline tripled and it doubled in the ISI database. The content of these articles corresponded to the priorities within mental health, but there is a need for better interlinking between researchers and mental health policymakers.

Little is known about the breadth and depth of scholarly publishing within the field of psychology and its related disciplines originating from Latin American authors. To better define the subject area, we underwent a data analysis to examine the trends (e.g., status, quantity, and quality of publications) of scholarly publications emanating from Latin America origin (i.e., the location of the primary author). Our findings suggest that there has been a swift and steady increase in the quantity of scholarly publications published by Latin American authors. This increase is marked as 880% between 2001 and 2013, with a slight increase in the number of International as opposed to Regional publications. This study reveals that scholarly publications originating from Latin America are on the rise, with anticipated future growth. Keywords: psychology, publication, Latin America, South America, Brazil ResumoPouco se sabe sobre a amplitude e a profundidade da publicação acadêmica no campo da psicologia e de suas disciplinas afins, provenientes de autores latino-americanos. Para melhor definir as variações entre as subarea, realizamos uma análise para examinar as tendências (por exemplo, status, quantidade e qualidade) de publicações acadêmicas produzidas na América Latina, tomando como referência o primeiro autor. Os resultados sugerem que houve um aumento rápido e constante na quantidade de publicações acadêmicas produzidas por autores latino-americanos. A prondução aumentou 880% entre 2001 e 2013, com tendência para aumento na publicação internacional.
