Digestible methionine + cystine requirement for Nile tilapia from 550 to 700 g

Abstract: -This trial was conducted to determine the dietary digestible methionine + cystine requirement of Nile tilapia (550 to 700 g) based on the ideal protein concept. Six hundred fish were distributed in a completely randomized design with five treatments and four replicates, with 30 fish per experimental unit. The fish were fed diets containing approximately 262 g of digestible protein/kg, 3,040 kcal of digestible energy/kg and 7.90, 9.40, 10.90, 12.40 or 13.90 g of methionine + cystine/kg. The fish were hand-fed … Show more

“…For methionine and cystine, the literature recommends values between 0.91 to 1.00% (Bomfim, Lanna, Donzele, Ferreira et al, 2008;Michelato et al, 2013) to Nile tilapia, values close to 0.90 to 0.95% for protein levels showed better performances. For threonine, the recommendation varies between 1.11 to 1.43% (Bomfim, Lanna, Donzele, Quadros et al, 2008) and the diets that showed the best values in this experiment were 1.20 to 1.70%.…”

“…, 5.8–6;.1 g kg −1 diet) and Nile tilapia (Michelato et al . , 5.5 g kg −1 diet; Nguyen & Davis , 4.9 g kg −1 diet). Except for different tilapia species, the above discrepancies in methionine requirement among fishes may be attributed to different diet composition, fish size and experimental conditions.…”

“…For example, adult Nile tilapia weighed from 550 to 700 g were chose in the study of Michelato et al . (), while juvenile fish (8.95 g) were used in our experiment; diets contained 15.8 KJ g −1 gross energy were used in the experiment of Lin et al . (), which was lower than that in the present study (16.9 versus 17.8 MJ kg −1 ).…”

“…The nutritional methionine requirement of tilapia is 0.7 % of the dietary protein. However, methionine is precursor of cystine, thus, it is recommended supplying 0.9 % methionine to tilapia diets, and CSM meal can then be a good methionine source of diets as it may supply up to 1.02 % digestible methionine (Diogenes et al, 2016;Michelato et al, 2013;Shiau, 2002).…”
